Dumb question for all you experts out there.
Were you reluctant to post your first photo for fear that it might be so bad that people would actually make fun of it? Or, worse yet, tell you it's nice because they didn't want to hurt your feelings?

Hello "Guy",, Welcome to the Hog.
There is a section on the home page for introducing yourself, and I would encourage you to post over there as well.
Read through the comments on the pictures out here on the Post your photo pages and you will see that for the most part,, this site is not like the "elitist" photography sites,,, where everyone is bashing everyone else's efforts. The people here have been quite friendly and have offered great advice and any criticism has always been with an educational flair,, and "Friendly"
I hope you have the same experience here that I have enjoyed for the year and a half or so that I have been out here.

Welcome to UHH! As a recent newcomer myself, I can appreciate how you feel. I think you can count on honest constructive criticism from some very talented folks to help you enhance your skills and genuine sincerity if someone posts that they like your shot.
I don't believe anyone would make fun of any shot you post. After all, everyone has to start somewhere and we all had to take that first step. I love this site and have learned so much in a very short amount of time.
I've also been inspired to upgrade to a better camera and I'm thrilled with it!! I give full credit to the people here who use the same model and post fantastic shots, I hope one day to be that good too.
I would love to see a pic.... :-D :-D

Hi Guy. I've been taking casual candid pictures for over 50 years but just joined this forum, my first and only, about four months ago. I was nervous about posting my first picture too but I went ahead and did it. There are different places to post your pictures. I post mine in the photo gallery.
You can ask people for help when you post in the gallery or you can simply post them for others to see. I just post my photos for others to see and do most of my learning but looking at the photography posted by others. It's amazing how much you can learn and grow however you choose to do it.
Now you know me so you've already got one photo buddy. Post a few pictures and see how quickly you'll meet others. It's really a great group of people.

Please don't be timid about posting. There are a ton of great people here and no matter what, the only opinion that counts is yours. Here is my experience here: I only picked up a "real" camera 7 months ago. By reading everything I can, picking a few brains here and asking a lot of questions, I've been able to take a few acceptable photos. When you do post you may get a couple of both of the kinds of responses you mentioned, but most of all you will find a lot of support and possibly some kind and helpful advice to improve your shots the next time. Some photos will just invoke memories or feelings with some and they will open up and begin some great conversations. Welcome and please do post. I love to see other folks pictures.

Hi Guy, welcome! The vast majority of fine folks on this forum :) are kind and helpful. Ignore the 1% who are "having a bad day" and just enjoy the experience. I learn new stuff everyday (and have enjoyed helping a few newbies as well).
