Finally one of our metro parks moved one of their hummingbird feeders to a place where I could get some shots finally. I used a 11 year old Nikon D3 and my 600mm F:4G VR and a Nikon SB-910 with a Mag Mod mounted and powered by a ProPack PB-960 power pack. I used a singe dynamic sensor or all 51 sensors. I varied the strobe power between 1/4 power and full power. I kept the shutter speed either at 1/2500 or 1/8000

The first 4 shots were taken in 2002 on the eagle preserve at Haines Alaska using a Nikon F5 and a Sigma 800mm F:5.6. These shots are film scans. The following 3 shots are at Lock & Dam 14 this past January. I was using a D5 and my Nikkor 600mm F:4G VR. The next 2 are at Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge in 2007. I used a Nikon D2Xs and my Sigma 800mm F:56 AF. The second to last is Magee Marsh this spring using a Nikon D810 and my Nikkor 600mm F:4 G VR. The last image is at Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge in 2007. Here I used the Nikon D2Xs and the Sigma 800mm F:56 AF.

The Osprey was on the Maumee River a couple of years ago. After checking with fishermen the orange colored fish turns out to be a species of carp.

On Nikon cameras D810, D600 and Df I rotate thru single, 9 sensors, 21 sensors or all 51 sensors. On my D3 I use single sensor dynamic. I also use a shutter speed of 1/2000 and higher. The higher the shutter the sharper the image. As for panning, go practice on auto traffic. Or if you can drag racing, motorcycle racing.
Your Canon should should have something similar.

I use a Nikon D810, D600, D3 or a Df on a Nikkor 600mmF:4 G VR . Its mounted on a old (2011) Gitzo Carbon Fiber tripod with Kirks Enterprises new Gimbal head. I also use 21 sensors or group 4. I shoot all the time on either a tripod or monopod. I never handhold. I move all the weight in a runners baby buggy.

Here is a small collection of birds in flight. I could put many, many more up, the site limits posting to 10 images

Here are the few warblers I managed to get with Magee Marsh being closed. I'm lucky to even get these images.

I use the Nikon SB-900 or the SB-910, I would not use the better beamer. Instead use MagMod's wildlife kit. If you send me your email I'll send you a PDF I wrote about using flash with birds, my email is Larrys@bex.net.

Since you have a D7000, download Nikon Capture NX-D or View NX-i from Nikon's website. They both can show what your focus point(s) focused on.

Is the focusing off in all of your photos? It was known that a small number of D7000's had a severe back focusing issue. I had one. I had the AF fine tuning racked all the way to the extreme and it still wasn't enough. I returned that one and purchased another one from a different company. The autofocus was well calibrated on that one.

Also the op might be too far away. The 150-600's and my 200-500 is really affected by having the subject too far away.

I used my 600mmF:4 G VR with my 11 year old D3 for these shots. The shot of the eagle sitting on the muskrat mound was shot with my 18 year old Sigma 800mmF:5.6 AF and my D810 in DX crop mode for an effective focal length of 1200mm.

I have problems with camera bags on my shoulders so I switched to a bulky Think Tank belt system with a harness. So far (one month) it seems the best option although I do have to watch that I don't bump the pouches into people and objects. What did you finally settle down with? Or are you struggling with the less than ideal?

I use a $30 baby buggy at our several of our metro parks. It holds the 600mmF:4 G VR and the 200-500, tripods, chair and small cooler

I've seen this lens costing nearly $10,000. Sigma has a 120-300mmF:2.8 optical stabilized and Internal focus and zooming which is in their Sports category for their Global Vision and only costs $3000 to $2700. Given the Sigma lens has a very good established history with the sports press why spend $10,000?
