I am currently using a Slik U212 tripod with a Manfrotto 494RC2 ball head
which works quite well, but I just received the Tamron 150-600 lens and I'm sure it will tax this combo. would you recommend the 498 model or something else entirely? the Tamron is on the D5100. Have learned a lot from y'all for which I thank you.

thank you so much for your comments, I am leaning toward the Tamron but the Sigma comes with a very good price. I am left with what to do with the gap tween the 18-55 and the 150.

new to DSLR, I have the D5100, Nikkor 35mm 1.8, Nikkor 18-55mm kit, Nikkor 70-300 f4.5 lens, also a Kenko 1.4 teleplus pro extender and the SB600 speedlite. also the Yongnu remote control. I would like to get into bird photography, wildlife, landscapes and old barns & buildings.
with that in mind, which of the following option would you recommend.
1. keep everything as is (likely the 70-300 would be too short)
2. sell the 70-300 and buy the Sigma 150-500mm f/5 OS HSM
3. sell the 70-300 and buy the Tamron 150-600 f5 VR

with option 2 & 3 there would be a gap between the 18-55 and the 150-500/600

Thanks for the input, I am happy with my D3100, however, would like to get a decent camera for my wife. Since I had all the lenses we needed I thought to buy a body for her that could use the same lenses, saw from reviews that the D90 was a good quality body but it was about the same price as the D3100. which would be the better buy. I am strictly an amateur.

New to DSLR's, I have a D3100 w/70-300 Nikkor, a 18-55mm Nikkor, a 35mm Nikkor. Am thinking of a second camera. I can buy another D3100 or a D90 for about the same price, which would be the better choice.

Hey thnk folks! I had an idea that it wouldn't work, so I came to the round table. The 70-300 that I ordered is the newer one. I will save my pennies and buy a prime.

I have a D3100 with the 18-55 and the 55-200 kit glass, have ordered a 70-300 f4.5 zoom, what are you opinions on using a 1.4 tele converter on the 70-300? BTW I am selling the 55-200. Will anything other than a Nikon TC work with this lens? Am working with a limited budget.
