lens for Nikon D5100

new to DSLR, I have the D5100, Nikkor 35mm 1.8, Nikkor 18-55mm kit, Nikkor 70-300 f4.5 lens, also a Kenko 1.4 teleplus pro extender and the SB600 speedlite. also the Yongnu remote control. I would like to get into bird photography, wildlife, landscapes and old barns & buildings.
with that in mind, which of the following option would you recommend.
1. keep everything as is (likely the 70-300 would be too short)
2. sell the 70-300 and buy the Sigma 150-500mm f/5 OS HSM
3. sell the 70-300 and buy the Tamron 150-600 f5 VR

with option 2 & 3 there would be a gap between the 18-55 and the 150-500/600
have learned a lot from this diverse group while lurking, hope to contribute soon.

My wife and I have the sig 150-500 and the Tamron 150-600...and both are good lenses...if the 300 is too short...you will like either one...but the 70-300 is a fine lens for the money...but I know the frustration of it being a little short

you've suffered with make-do long enough, buy the 150-600 and start enjoying the potential for good shots.

Hi, I have the D5100, and along with the kit lens 55-300mm, I purchased the Sigma 150-500mm and find that I can get pretty decent shots with what I have. I take a lot of photos of birds and am happy with what I have.

This was taken in my yard this past week... A Coopers Hawk caught a dove from our feeder and he was finishing up his meal when I snapped this photo. Taken with the big Sig.....

thank you so much for your comments, I am leaning toward the Tamron but the Sigma comes with a very good price. I am left with what to do with the gap tween the 18-55 and the 150.

I meant to include in my post that I didn't get rid of the 55-300 because I find it to be a good walk around lens also... just gives me the option of closeups if I want them... and at the 55mm end I find it pretty versatile. If you don't have to sell it, I wouldn't!

you can fill that 'gap' with a top quality 100mm macro for peanuts.

My first choice would be to keep the 70-300 VR and add the big Sigma or Tamron. My second choice would be to sell both the 18-55 and 70-300 and get a refurbished Nikon 18-105 VR for around $200. That gives you a much smaller gap that could be closed with a little cropping.

Another new option is the Sigma 150-600 Contemporary. It competes directly with the Tamron. Be careful because there is another model, the Sport, that costs twice as much and is two pounds heavier. You might not need that one.

It is the one I'd get today because I'm so pleased with the Sigma 150-500. The OS is incredible...and they claim to have improved it on the 150-600 Contemporary.

Me either. I had given mine to my daughter-in-law when I got a 28-300 and went to a full frame camera. I now have a D5300 as my second camera and want the 55-300 back. She won't give it back.

Or an 18-140 VR (instead of the 18-105) for about a hundred bucks more!

I doubt the Kenko would be of much use on the long telephoto lenses so you could get rid of that as well.
