What are the "slash and run" places?

I've only heard third-hand about some of the very busy/popular Eurpoean cities ... like Paris, Rome, etc., particularly when in very crowded places (train stations, etc.), and in some busy cities in Asia and S. America. Kind of a "technology pickpocket" problem

camerasecuritystraps.com has some better descriptions of the types of things that can happen. Yes, the people writing about it are also selling related projects, but I chose to play it safe and do what I can to protect my gear. I happen to also love the bag I got, in terms of the size, arrangement of pockets, etc., and find myself using it a lot even when security issues are not a concern (my go to bag for anywhere I go if I only need a portion of my gear).

Gleneric, could you tell us where you bought bag number 3 and it's ball park cost?

#3 is a mid-size shoulder bag bought recently for trips to places where "slash and run" theft is a problem ... thin slash-proof steel cable built into the straps, and steel mesh in the bag's fabric but with no noticeable weight issues. Generally only put in one body + a couple of lenses, but could probably squeeze in a bit more.

It is indeed a Pacsafe bag ... I think I ordered direct from Pacsafe.com, but my memory is short. Also ordered a camera strap that is slash-/cut-proof.

I'm scared to count them. I have a fetish for camera bags. My main bag is a wheeled bag that holds a lot of equipment. I have 4 various sized backpacks and several smaller bags. Also some individual lens bags. For several years I have used a padded lunch bag for a smaller camera that I used on assignments. Figure no one is going to steal my "lunch". It was cheaper than a real camera bag. For my upcoming trip to Alaska, I plan to use a PacSafe tote with an insert for camera equipment. It will also hold my MacBook Air. I am trying to figure out what to take because I don't want to be weighted down, so will downsize my equipment load. Would love to take it all, but traveling with daughter and family and they won't want to be slowed down. My husband refuses to go with us because he hates to stop all the time for photos. His reason for not going is: "Have you ever traveled with a photographer?"

I'm thinking I should travel with my dog more often, and modify my big LowePro backpack to fit him ... that way I won't have to carry the weight of it all ... maybe I'd have to rename him Sherpa :) I know what you mean about "travelling with a photographer" but from the other perspective ... my frustration is like yours as my wife is a non-photographer :(

I love it ... would be great to see it from a few other angles as well (I have a thing for old buildings like this ... loads of them on the prairies up here, but often well off of the public roads)

Have any of the Oly Fans read the new reviews on the OMD-EM5??
It sounds like it solves every single problem I have with the EP3---I'm thinking the EP3 with the 12mmf2.0 almost permanent and the EM5 with the new 24-50 Zoom...Still staying with my Leica for long range work,, and their 75mmf1.8 sounds like a good investment too. Would like to hear more reactions to those using the 40-150 and the 70-300 but will take a lot of convincing to give up the Leica with long lenses---RobertW

Have read the reviews of the EM5 on dpreview.com and thought it sounds like something I would love to have in my collection. On the way to bank today to burn my mortgage, so maybe I can start saving my pennies (depending on what my wife has planned for the post-mortgage years) :)

How many camera bags do you own and what is the purpose of each of those bags?

Four bags right now.

Big Lowepro backpack that will hold 2 bodies + all of my glass + flash + accessories (and tripod strapped on as well) ... use it fully loaded only occasionally because of the size/weight, but very happy with Lowepro.

#2 is Lowepro mid-size sling bag ... one body + a couple of lenses + flash ... wish it had connection capability for tripod or monopod. Primary bag for most photo-oriented trips, including vacations ... a nice balance of capacity for my stuff vs. comfort of carrying on an all-day hike.

#4 is small Olympus bag ... 1 body + 2 lenses max ... nice and compact.

Does anyone have experience with an Olympus DSLR? If so, which model? For some reason, Olympus just doesn't get as much press as Canon, Nikon, Sony, etc. Does anyone have an opinion as to why this is so? I know that Olympus lenses have been used for years in the medical industry so there must be a measure of quality with the company.

Just posted a reply to another question about Olympus ... sounds like the start of an Oly revolution to me :) I love my Olympus e-520 and the EP-2 ... wish I had the funds to get an e-5 (or maybe the new EM5) and at least one of the top-of-the-line lenses, but not in the stars right now :( Same experience that others have noted about being the only Oly shooter in any photog classes I have taken ... to each his own is all I can say. I'm happy with the photos I am getting and that is what matters to me. Definitely not a believer in the "you need the most expensive camera to get good shots" mentality as I have seen some phenomenol photos from some cheap cameras, and a lot of crap from some high end gear.

I am a long time Olympus fan, I have been using them since I purchased and OM-10, then an OM-1 and a variety of lenses. A few years ago I got into Digital with an E-620 and am now up to an E-5. I have a variety of digital lens and am looking for a super telephoto, something 200-500 say, that won't break the bank. I currently have a 50mm F2, a 12-60, a 50-200, 7-14, 14-35, 35-100 with teleconverters and extension tube. Has anyone tried a Sigma lens with the E-5, and your results and impressions. Or any others. Any suggestions, I do everything from Macro to landscape, animals in the wild, you name it, I'll try it. Thanks

Another Oly person here ... owned nothing but Olympus for the past 30-35 years (started with OM10, then OM2S ... just sold the last of the film stuff 3 months ago). Now using e-520 for about 4 or 5 years, and added EP-2 a year and a half back. Only non Oly lens is the Panasonic 20mm for the Panasonic, and I love it. Have and love 50mm macro, 14-54 MkII, 9-18mm. Have 70-300 (slow to focus, but otherwise happy) and 40-150 (has only been on camera twice). Never have tried a Sigma lens, but interested in hearing feedback from any who have them.

Hi there Glen,
I know now where it is but have never been there. One of my children will be moving even farther up north this year so I am sure I will get an idea as to what it must be like as I visit.
Good name by the way.

Hi y'all
Just wanted to say that we are leaving our winter home here in Texas and headed back to Ont. Canada for 6 mo. I have really enjoyed the UHH forum. I won't be able to check in as much as I use the Bell stick back home and it is too costly to use except for Emails and limited surfing. I will pop in as often as possible to see what is happening here and look forward to next fall when I can join in again. Have a safe and healthy summer everyone and thanks for all the help you have given this old girl, eh!

Love that last one ... makes me long for the days growing up on a beautiful lake in SE Ontario. All that is needed to make that shot absolutely perfect for me would be if this forum would allow for sound clips to go with photos ... I think a loon call would be perfect here!

Thanks. It is a little fuzzier than I would like, but I was pleased with result under the conditions (300mm, hand held ... luckily it was a relatively calm day on the water).

You should be pleased with the result, and the slight fuzziness doesn't take away from the image at all. A nicely composed and exposed shot with moody emotional impact. Hope it's framed somewhere.

Thanks Bmac. Now that you mention it, I have never actually printed and framed any of my photos ... just never seem to get around to it (life gets in the way sometimes).

From a few years back, taken from the deck of a ferry from Victoria BC to the mainland. Have been sorting through some old photos on hard drive and had completely forgotten about this trip.

I'll be taking the ferry from Port Angeles to Victoria and back this summer. Sure would be great to get a few shots of Mt Baker (or Mt Ranier) as nice as yours.

Thanks for the reply. I'm jealous ... no trips to the coast for me this year :(

This is a beautiful photo, but I can say with a fare amount of certainty that this is Mt. Baker instead of Rainier. I even looked through Google images before making this statement to check my accuracy. The photo is gorgeous though, definitely something I would have printed.

OOPS ... my apologies! Guess I had my directions mixed up. I thought ferry was heading due east and I was shooting straight off the starboard side ... which would seem to point me more towards Rainier. Looking at the ferry route map, it looks like ferry path may be more northeast, so could be Baker, and ferry also does a bit of winding around through some islands so points in a number of different directions at various times through the trip across.

I grew up in the Puget Sound area and was blessed to see this type of view if and when it was clear, which isn't often. Great place to grow up when I didn't realize there were places where it was sunny far more often than cloudy, gloomy and drizzly. Nice catch!

Thanks.
