Even though the D810 is a DSLR it's super quiet when you need it like in a museum or a church. I don't need 36MP as I rarely print large enough to need it. Even my old D300s prints fine to 16x20 or 20x30 if I'm careful.
I picked a D600 that was barely used (2798 on the shutter count) at $410. It's only 2.5 ounces heavier than a D7200 but works great.

Are you near a camera rental shop where you are at? If so try each model out for a couple of days each and see which one is better to you. Better to spend a little now and not be stuck with something you don't like later.

Nikon might be able to do a refurbished exchange for the old item if you have all of the original docs and packaging. Check with a local Nikon dealer as they might have more info from Nikon.

Life Pixel is great at conversions. They are a bit expensive but are worth it if you shoot IR all the time. If you are a D-I-Y-er you can get the IR filter for your camera and just remove the IR filter and replace it with the new filter.

A link on the whole process is here:

https://www.lifepixel.com/tutorials/infrared-diy-tutorials/life-pixel-canon-powershot-s100-diy-digital-infrared-conversion-tutorial

You have an advantage with a point and shoot as they are mirrorless and require no focus calibration as focusing is all done on the sensor itself.

If you choose to have them do the conversion they have a special $50 off conversions and cameras till the end of the month.

I have 2 SB-400s and use them all the time. I have a friend who is selling off his gear and he has a SB-400 and offered it to me for a low price. I'll test it out and if you want just send me a private message here and we'll work out a price. I think I could get it to you for between $40-50 with the case. They are perfect for fill flash, bounce is a plus and they go to sleep and wake up with camera power on/off or shutter tap. Super lightweight as well and save your camera from running it's batteries down with the built in flash. Just let me know if you are interested. Need to downsize here anyway. Had an ongoing 4 year gas attack and the house looks like a camera store. Can't find the front door anymore.

Don't know about repairs in your area but I do know something about that camera.

The 500 DTL was a marketing gimmick to sell the DTL 1000 at a lower cost to clear inventory. It has 1/1000 second speed in the unmarked area just past the 1/500 setting. Mamiya wanted to sell off remaining stock but they were not moving until an engineer just said make a new top plate and don't engrave the 1/1000 second setting. It worked as the camera sold at the lower price. Try it out for yourself.

Anyway, if you are looking for a matching flash to go with the purchase I have a Mamiyalite ZE strobe in mint condition with original case and wide angle diffuser. There is zero battery corrosion and the stobe works perfectly. If you're interested just let me know and I'll provide some photos and possible a video on youtube to show it working and how to install and store the diffuser.

Congrats on picking up a classic.

I really don't think DSLR's will fade much, there's always going to be people who will much rather have a full bodied camera in their hands. Mirrorless technology doesn't really stand out against the old DSLR.

I think they said the same thing about film cameras when digital cameras came out. Also, that cropped sensors wouldn't give the same results as full frame, etc. They said the same thing about 8 cylinder cars over smaller engines and now we have 4 cylinder cars that outperform their larger ancestors.

The only constant in the universe is change. Pick up a mirrorless and then tell me you feel the same way.

Canon and Nikon are late to the party but also haven't done much in DSLRs lately either. Nikon only added the D780 to the lineup and no crop sensor changes. Can't speak for Canon but I think all manufacturers see the writing on the wall. Some of the cellphones are pushing 50 megapixels plus.

I'll be renting the Olympus OM-D E-M1 MARK III soon for a test drive as it has the ability to shoot up to a 50 megapixel image handheld and 80 megapixel on a tripod. No current DSLR can do this yet. I'll let you know how it goes and how much weight it saves me in the field.

I've been looking to go mirrorless for awhile now but both Canon and Nikon's offerings seem to be a little too late for me as Sony, Fuji, Olympus and Panasonic have a huge jump on them. I found this photographer on youtube (Joe Edelman) who was a 42 year Nikon user and he quit Nikon to go all mirrorless with Olympus. Olympus didn't pay him for any reviews and in the last few years he became an Olympus ambassador. After watching his why he switch and his 6 month follow up I just might make the switch myself. Granted it's micro 4/3 but the images are fantastic even enlarged to 6 feet by 8 feet. The weight savings are huge and it will save my back and knees in the field doing landscape work. Links are here so check them out and let us know what you think.

Hey all,

I just came across a link for a free full version of Luminar 3 as well as some other discounts. I believe that once you download it and register you can use it for an upgrade to version 4 for a discount over the full price for a new install. There are other links for discounts for other software apps. You don't need to be a Nikon user for these it's just from a Nikon forum site. Enjoy.

Well if anyone has the budget for a Zeiss super wide (15mm) at about $2500 they are amazing. Nearly zero distortion from edge to edge. I'd rent one first before breaking out that much for a specialized prime wide but it can be addictive. Great for architectural work and real estate. For now I'll just be happy with my Tokina wides. Not complaining just dreaming when I could hit the lottery and make one photo salesperson's decade by cleaning out the store.

That and moving a Blue Moon bottler and pig farm closer to my house. Ham looks great but I think you need more beer. Don't forget the orange slices.

Loved Zeiss glass when I did have my really old Hassy 1000F. Razor sharp and built like a tank.

Cameraf4 and anyone else who remembers Contax or would like to try, you can find the Contax N series on ebay for about $150 for the bodies and the lenses range from a couple hundred and go up but they are extraordinary pieces of engineering. It's the last of the Contax line that had autofocus. I'm curious to see if shooting 35mm in slide on those would digital copy with a Nikon D850 with the slide copier setup and really pull 45 Megapixels with Zeiss/Contax lenses. Would be nice to see the results.

I had one of these many years ago. It does it's job well and the low level option pictured above was great for macro shots in the field. The legs are very sturdy. See how you like it and if you need to do something more advanced you can always change the head to a different model.

Check to see if they have photo contests in your area. It's a great way to get local unbiased feedback. It's also great if you win too!

I've had this happen with thumbnails showing but no final full size photo. If you are removing the cards and connecting them to your computer and having this issue try putting the cards back in the camera and connect the camera to your computer. This way you can see the file numbers in order and then try to transfer them one by one if they survived. This happened about a year ago and to me on a Nikon D300s and once connected I saw all my files. Don't know if it will work for Canon but it's worth a try.

A great starter camera is the Nikon D3500 with the 18-55mm AF-P with Vibration reduction for just $399 at any Best Buy. It's a lightweight camera that has a built in how to guide that will answer questions while you are out shooting that comes in handy for a beginner. The lens is super sharp and would cover almost anything as you are just starting out. You can always add lenses later. The pop up flash is great for indoors on basic subjects and works well for outdoor fill flash. Just don't let the salesman (or woman) try to sell you the two lens kit as the 70-300mm AF-P is not the VR version and you'll only end up selling that lens on ebay for a loss. If you want to get the 70-300mm make sure it's the VR version as it really helps in longer shots.

If you would rather go for a Canon camera the Rebel T7 and T7i are basically the same camera but might be a bit more on price.

If I remember correctly, Nikon, B&H, KEH, etc. when selling a refurbished Nikon item only offer a 90 day warranty. It's better than nothing and if it saves you 30-50% on the price it might be worth it as most of us never use the full warranty times unless we really abuse our cameras and lenses.
