Comparing LR 6 versus the latest subscription version -11.4 - is like comparing dodging and burning in a darkroom to LR6. Or maybe trying to compare apples to tank axles. There really is a world of difference and the latest LR versions have a load of capabilities for editing that you are missing out on by trying to stay in the dark ages by sticking to the mantra of "I want to own it rather than rent it".
Join the world of really easy access to very sophisticated editing of your photos for less that 2 lattes per month.

It sounds like you had some LR files that you processed on your laptop and other files processed on your desk top.
You can put the photo files any where (NOT NAS) and then have LR find them AFTER YOU HAVE IMPORTED THE LRCAT FILE FROM THE WORK YOU DID ON THE LAP TOP. Each separate install of the LR will have its on LRCAT unless you have somehow kept them mirrored on both machines.
I think the recommend process is to import the LRCAT into and merge it with the LRCAT on your desktop. Then when you go to find the files from the laptop in the desktop the LR will ask you if you want to find the files (they'll all have a question mark beside them)Just tell LR where the laptop file now reside.
Probably best to have all of the laptop files in a sub folder to the folder you have for you phot files on the desktop. Then you'll only have to do the find once.
Thewe thoughts apply to LR Classic. Can't speak to LR in the cloud. Remember the LRCAT contains ALL of the info for any edits you have done on an image.

Let's be honest. A PHOTOGRAPH DOES NOT!!! reflect reality. Why people think a photo is sacrosanct and post editing is toying with reality reflects a lack of understanding of reality.
Any photo, dating, from the earliest efforts, through the film days, and onward into DSLR/Mirrorless images and then the evolution of sophisticated post processing software all have one thing in common. The IMAGE is a product of REALITY as interpreted by the photo gear used and the way in which the image was processed by the combination of the lens and the image capture technology and the post processing applied to captured images as designed by the maker of things like film or data processing inside the most modern of cameras.
NO camera has the dynamic range to capture the entirety of the real scene. What we see most often is the RAW image as interrupted inside our cameras by the manufacturer to create the venerable JPEG image
So lets quit worrying about what post processing is applied by the individual photographer after the designer/maker of the camera had applied their "POST" processing. The virgin camera image is all up to the opinions and collected wisdom of the maker/supplier of the product we as photographers choose to use plus various color gamuts that these designers may apply.

As an adjunct to my prior comments about Ansel Adams I would add a comment I heard spoken at an evening dinner after a day of meetings with some Kodak execs in Rochester.
Our conversation had take a trip into the areas of the evolution of photography. One of the execs opined "Some day we will be editing every pixel in a photograph." This was around 1987. Long before digital photography became a practical reality and even longer before personal computers had the processing power to edit the millions of pixels in modern digital photos.
Prescient!!

One of the most revered photographers of all time and whose work is set forth as a standard by which others might be judged is Ansel Adams. I don't have at my fingertips some before/after/light-room images of the work done by this master but suffice to say, the out of cameras images of his most famous photos are perhaps the most washed out not worth saving out of camera shots that you can imagine. Adams was a master of composition in the field and a master of light in the light room.
It takes both to make the most memorable works of PHOTOGRAPHIC art.

Does it really matter. All aspects of photography are an art form.

There's a road that very few people know that runs from Ferndale to about Petrolia along what is known as the
Lost Coast".
Ferndale is a sight unto itself with many late 19th century restored buildings.
From Ferndale take Mattole Rd over to the coast and stay along the coast until the road finally turns inland through the Humboldt Redwoods state park.
You'll be rewarded with many miles of no other tourists while you enjoy many vistas of the coast. Humboldt Redwoods is nice too and you'll be coming in from a side of the park that few people go to with a beautiful drive through magnificent redwoods.
I'd suggest doing this southbound and allow 2.5 - 3 hours when you stop for photos or just to enjoy the unpopulated beaches. .

Some Considerations
1- Both sites will be overcrowded - more like Disneyland than any natural setting - during the travel season.Stay away unless you enjoy traffic jams and long lines for food, and zero access to parking at relatively rare parking spots. In Glacier you may see a spot you'd like to photograph but might drive 5 miles before you can snap up a parking spot being vacated by another lucky person. Going to the Sun Hwy is not walker friendly.
2- Photo opportunities in Yosemite are highly constrained because much of the parking that used to exist at good photo spots away from the highly popular areas, which are always over crowded, have been eliminated by new road "improvements" over the past few years. Unless you're willing to do lots of walking along roads you'll do better to get your photos from National Geographic. In the "Off" travel season consider getting into the park before 7:00 AM and go elsewhere after 10:00 when all the camper have finished breakfast.
3-Glacier has VERY limited hotel/motel opportunities in/near the park. Most close down after mjd September. Better luck to stay near the eastern entrance than the west. If you want west consider staying in Kalispell. Assume that the Going to the Sun Highway will be closed by snow after mid September.

In short, the experience in these parks is totally ruined by overcrowding. I know I'll be castigated by others for the following statement but "I feel our more popular national parks in our country should be limited to access by American citizens ONLY." Then they will be at least a bit more enjoyable.

Interested?

Where are you located? If in the San Francisco area we might be able to go mano -a - mano. Otherwise it gets a bit more complex. Bottom line you have to trust me to send you the product after I have trusted you to send me secure money. Don't really know how its done.
Thoughts?

I had an exactly similar experience. After cataract surgery I found that the world really wasn't masked in a dull yellowish grey. And yes I had been over correcting photos in Post.
Two leanings.
1- If your medical advisor sez you should wait a while for the cataracts to worsen - wish a pox on that person and find someone who has you interests at heart. Life is too short to see the world through a yellow grey lens.

2- My depth of field judgement was dangerously poor due to the cataracts. In the year that I "waited" for the cataracts to worsen on the advice of eye doctors I suffered 7 falls due to not being able to sense adequately things like curbs, stairs, irregularity in surfaces on trails , etc.

I'm 5 years post surgery now with no falls and enjoying the true color of the world.

As above with Gene and others I use LR for almost 100% of basic editing. But I have the 3 Topaz apps embedded for what I consider the best in noise reduction and sharpening and on the occasion where I may need more pixels. Go to PS when I want to do a sky replacement, particularly dicey editing out of some parts of a photo or add text, etc.

Clearly you have not experienced the impacts of the latest upgrades particularly to LR. Certainly not those related to editing and crating masks for example. Definitely not trivial .
