This species is on my bucket list to get a nice picture of. I recently moved into an area where they are known, not common, but known. I have hopes. . . beautiful bird, beautiful shot.

Pretty great.

Those plants are at the top of the list of most visited nectar sources for a lot of butterfly species - Joe Pye weed, Button bush, Swamp thistle, Swamp milkweed.

Yes, and that's exactly where I am standing when these were taken, in a swamp, often with wet feet. :)

Looking forward to the coming butterfly season. Going through some old pictures, I enjoy shooting late in the afternoon, when the sun is low, and catching their backlit wings.

These were taken not long after I got into digital photography with my first DSLR, a Nikon D-70, and either a 70-210 or 75-300 Nikon lens.

Very nicely done. These are regulars in my area also. I hope to eventually capture them as well as you have done.

Nice photo. I've got that lens in Canon mount. I have the Sigma 150-600 Contemporary for Nikon. The contemporary works quite well and it's no where near the weight of the Sport.

I wrestled greatly in the decision between the sport and contemporary models. The cost and the weight were both greatly in the contemporary's favor. I decided on the sport model as being fully sealed was important to me for dust and moisture reasons. This lens is very heavy, but as I always shoot on a tripod with pistol grip head, the weight wasn't a big negative factor for me. When I get too old to use it, I thought the sport model might have a better resale value than the contemporary. It was a close decision. I'm sure I would have also been happy with the contemporary model.

This is magic to me. . . being able to take a picture like this. Love this Sigma 150-600mm sport lens.

Hi Dave, the loon looks good. For creating upload files, have a look at this post that suggests how to reduce the pixel resolution rather than the JPEG quality to address the file sizes of your online posts: https://www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-512745-1.html

Thank you. That was helpful.

I had much better light yesterday afternoon. I was able to shoot at 1/1000 sec., f6.3, and ISO 400. This image is uncropped. This 150-600mm Sigma really helps my reach.

I usually have problems showing much detail in the loon's very black head feathers, but the sun was over my right shoulder, and the bird turned his head in this shot to catch a bit of sun on his face which really helped.

I tried several times, without success to upload the original file. I re-exported it at 80%. It changed the file size from 18mb to 7mb. Upload failed again re-exported again at %50 and a 2.4mb file size. Not sure what it will do to the quality, and I'm not sure if this is typical for this site, or is it a problem with my ISP. We are way out in the country and don't have high Internet speeds.

Finally success. . . :)

Good capture. What are all the white specks?

The trees are beginning to bud and bloom here, and the water is covered with bits and pieces of that.

Even though it was an overcast day, you did get a nice shot of that bird. I'll bet you do get a nice variety of wildlife from your deck.

We're nearing the anniversary of our first year here, and yes the variety of wildlife. . .primarily birds is wonderful.

Nice picture, too bad the head was cut off in the reflection

I tried uploading a revised crop, showing the image with the head reflection but I wasn't successful. The head area of the reflection is so distorted by water movement, that I didn't think it added sufficient interest in comparison to what was lost by the smaller image of the bird itself.
