No luck. It was suggested to download the pdf manual (the 400+ page version) and search for "lock." I haven't done that.

I did download the manual. Nothing found. I tried words like : menu - set - lock - function - control - custom - cursor....... but nothing mentioned about locking the key function of the menu/set (cursor). Lots of talk about locking the AE/AF functions but that is it.

Oh well - I appreciate your trying to help with this issue. Not sure what I will do at this point. Wife was very disappointed when several times the controls were ‘inadvertantly’ changed to something totally different than what she had set it for.

She does have another wi/fi enabled point and shoot style camera that is more button friendly. She may start using that one - and I’ll take the Panasonic as a quick grab and go backup to my Canon D6 MkII.

Thanks again.

I put your question to the zs50 forum on dpreview, and I'll let you know if there's a fix.

Thanks drharveys !!

I didn't answer your question- I don't know if keys are lockable.

Well - I went through the Dpreview web site, and tried all combos of searches for the Panasonic and to try and lock the cursor key.... of course - found nothing. But I do appreciate your suggestion. Guess I will just have to figure out a way not to have wife touch those buttons while using the camera..

Very recently, I bought this camera (used) to keep in the car for those "wish I had my Pentax K5iis with me" moments. The menus are incredibly complex and I understand the frustration! Also, it's easy to cover the flash accidentally with your finger. I recommend the dpreview.com Panasonic forum; you can filter by product.

Thanks for the idea.... I will check dpreview.com and see if someone has addressed or can answer this question.

Thanks again,

This is the problem with the ongoing proliferation of buttons. Learn to live with it.

I know, I know. "I need all those buttons because I use them once or twice a year. You spent the money, live with the price.

Not sure I understand your comment. The Menu / Set button is used on this camera a lot..... but once set during a sequence of taking photos.... it would be nice not to accidentally move the buttons to cause the camera to change to a completely different set of functions.

Thanks,

Does anyone know if it is possible to somehow lock the Menu/Set cursor on the Panasonic Lumix ZS50 camera? I have searched the camera's manual and online, and even tried looking at some You Tube videos with no luck. My wife loves the camera but is constantly changing the settings inadvertantly while holding the camera as the button is really very sensitive. It has become such an annoyance that she no longer wants to use the camera.

There was some comments online that the Function button Fn1 and Fn2 can be custom programmed to make this work on Panasonic's (but it appears that it is only on other models and not the ZS50). Any thoughts so that my wife doesn't totally give up?

Thanks Buck... so I hear-we’ll probably stick to group tours as well as the other protections.

That is what we did....had a group of 8 of us who walked together. I only carried my camera, no backpack or extra lens etc. while there. One of our travel friends decided after the cruise to stay a few days in Barcelona.....and as luck would have it had his wallet stolen after stopping for a snack. He has no idea how it was stolen after he put it back in his pants pocket.

I vote for the 18-200. Also be cautious in Barcelona. It is the thieves haven of Europe.

Apparently I’m very much in the minority here. I have been on a number of cruises and continue to feel they are the ultimate vacation; you pack your belongings, get on the ship, unpack and let them take you to many places you only dream about while being pampered and waited upon, and dining on gourmet cuisine.

I do agree that anyone considering a cruise should research their choices carefully, but it is a gross generalization to paint the entire industry with the same brush based on the news reports of a single cruise line.

I have sailed on several different cruise lines, but not on Carnival so I can’t speak from personal experience with that line. However, I had decided early on in my cruising that Carnival was a line I would never use, but for other reasons than stated in this posting.

Some may not care for the overcrowding of a venue when a cruise ship is in port, but there are a number of cruise destinations whose economies are almost solely dependent on those cruise passengers.

Thank you so much for your input, suggestions and links!! I have had lots of mishaps, but the good thing, I live amongst all this beauty so will get second chances to get it right. Right now I'm a bit overwhelmed, but still having fun!

I am a newbie also. I have purchased David Busch book for my specific camera. Has great photos, and easy explanation of functions. I also like that he lists all of his suggested settings and why. You can review ( and read some of the pages of his books online ) before buying at Amazon. I buy the paper edition - not the ebook version - and carry it with me a lot for easy reference.

By the way... nice photos.

I was there in July and did land tours from Fairbanks to Seward...and cruised from there to Vancouver. Did the bus to the interior of Denali Park and shot with my Sigma 100-400 (Canon) and could have used a bit more reach a few times. I did bring along a Monopod and used it a lot. I would suggest a teleconverter instead of a longer much heavier lens to lug around. It is a great place for photos for sure!

We used All Around Italy tours when there during our cruise stop, and they provided an experienced well versed tour guide for Pompeii for a great price. I carried my Canon EOS and a Lowepro backpack (no tripod) as I recall and had no issues. As others have mentioned, I would use a tour guide to get around as there is so much to see, and you won’t want to miss anything.

I shoot with Canon 6d and 7D Mark II. Birds and wildlife are my usual subjects, but I now need a good lens for landscape in the Canadian Rockies. Already have a 24-105, 15-55(kit) and 50mm. What else would you suggest either instead of, or in addition to? Budget is modest, less than $500.

I recently purchased a Tamron 28-300mm F/3.5 - 6.3 for my 6D Mk II that I am very happy with. It is my walkaround lens, but it was a bit more than the $500 limit you have....unless you can find a refurb or used one. Take a look at it... it is relatively lightweight and compact. It measures around 4 1/2 inches tall with the lens caps on. I am plan on using it on a future trip to Hawaii.
