My first visit to Krakow has been very interesting and challenging photographically. Initially, it was cloudy and rainy the first few days but now it's sunny and the streets are lined with many different "faces." I tried to capture the essence of the culture by photographing their faces as they play or walk the street. In my opinion, black & white photography captures the intensity and meaning of the photograph. Please download for best results. I welcome your comments. (By the way, these were shot with either the NIKON D5 or D850, NIKKOR 70-200mm 2.8 AF-S or the NIKKOR 14-24mm 4.0. ISO varied btw 200-400)

Doc, I really enjoyed these BW photos, and someday hope to produce similar results myself. You outlined your camera data, which is great! Can you please outline your imaging process for us newbies (shot RAW, Color, BW, processed with what software, and etc)? I'm just starting to get into digital photo processing beyond cellphone photos and basic Mac Photos software, and would love to have a small peek into your work process. And yes, I understand there is much to learn.

I'm surprised no one mentioned Pixelmator. It's $30 on the Apple App Store ($60 for the Pro version). It was created specifically for Mac OS and has slimmed down versions for iPhone and iPad ($4.99). You can edit with Pixelmator directly from Mac Photos (file/edit with...), or use Pixlmator's viewer which looks into your Photos library. I was a PhotoShop Elements user, but disliked the messy way it handled my Photos files, and was no longer supported by Photos "edit with..." feature. Pixelmator looks and feels like PhotoShop, with all the same tools, at a fraction of the cost. There are many tutorials online and a user community for support (along with manufacturer support). It has layer editing features, painting and so on. Like most of us, I just need time to go and play.

There are so many filters and choices in black and white editing settings. It is difficult to choose what is right. Perhaps it is a personal choice as to what you publish.

I'm curious; what process did you use to create the B & W? I also like to try B&W and I am often left disappointed with the results. I am a fan of Ansel Adams', and would love to emulate work. I'm new to UHH, is there a Black and White group? That might be a challenge, produce your best Black and White and post on a certain date, and we can compare work and technique! Anyone interested?

Thank you, that is an endangered Florida Scrub Jay. They are a very sociable bird whose habitat is quickly being over built.

Now for the big question. Did YOU take the time to sit and relax at these wonderful settings?
