Some/many may disagree, but Mac's Photos application does a pretty good job of editing. The price: free.

Agree with grandpaw on Lightroom Classic CC and Photoshop, which works on Macs and PCs. There are plenty of tutorials by Adobe and tons of how to youtube videos. There are several other apps that come in the package that you may be interested in and I see updates every few weeks with bug fixes and enhancements. Both Lightroom and Photoshop are feature rich so if it can be done, you can do it in lightroom and photoshop.

I'm using Photoshop 99.98% of the time. In fact, I purchased my 27" iMac for only that purpose. It's migrated just a bit, but still all photo related.

Photoshop has some video editing ability. Lightroom can be tricked into it by making a "slideshow" using video clips.

My solution is the $10 per month system for Photoshop and Lightroom Classic. Then I use Adobe Premiere Elements for video editing. It works well with Lightroom.

You can edit video in Photoshop, but I would not recommend it unless you are using it for adding an effect you can't do elsewhere. I will bring in certain video clips to sharpen them, because Photoshop does a better job to my eyes than the other Adobe programs.

and you can also buy Photoshop without getting into a monthly fee and constant updates to learn.

Agree. For what it can do it does well. Meets most of my needs - especially cataloging and sharing amongst all my Apple devices. Obviously designed for amateur photographers. Photoshop Elements would be a step up. Otherwise Photoshop and Lightroom seem to be the most popular for the "advanced" editors. :).

I use Affinity Photo on my Mac Pro, cost was $40 one time, all updates are at no cost. It will do video just fine. If you don't like paying $10/month for ever, which will go up but never down, you may want to try a trial time. It is fast, will do most of what PS does at a fraction of the cost and it was developed for a Mac first, but is now Windows compatible. I have not run into any bugs and have used it for 7 months. Lots of tutorials on You Tube. Just saying that I am no longer a PS user and will never go back to Adobe products when I can get the results I need at a fraction of the cost.

What's wrong with Photos that comes with the Mac? I use that and Luminar.

I use Luminar which was originally designed for the Apple world. I think costs about $70-90. It works pretty good and there are plenty of youtube videos available. Check out Jim Nix if you get it. Good luck. This is one of those topics with lots of opinions.

So your criteria is cost? Ok. As you can see there are a variety of options. On UHH you will tend to get a lot of people recommending Adobe Lightroom. It’s a fine program, Adobe makes great* software, but it is subscription based and the Photogaphers Plan will cost $120 per year. I think that is a bargain*. But it seems like that might be is outside your budget range. Do not fear, there are other good softwares available as well. And most all have trial versions, so the best thing you can do is try a few, and go with what works best for you.

You didn’t mention what camera brand you use. There are some brand-specific softwares available as well. They can be very good.

Nobody has mentioned Capture One yet. That is another option.

*Disclaimer, I use Adobe software and I am very happy with it.

I use Photos too and iMovie for video, it's pretty good, both come with your Mac. You can try PhotoScape X for Mac (free).
