Bruce,

A 5-year old computer is relatively new in my house. Still using a 2009 iMac, albeit upgraded with a SSD, bluetooth 4, 802.11ac, and 20-GB RAM. You have diagnosed the issue of being heat related and unfortunately you can't simply "open the back cover" to watch the fans n an iMac. My computer can also get hot, but never to the point that it crashed. One recommendation would be to use a third party fan control app like TG Pro. On my machine it will display information on 14 different temperature sensors and the three fans. You can manually increase the speeds of the fans individually to the point that you can hear them.

Why a Canon T6? Do you have access to Canon mount lens that drive you towards the Canon system? Have you used the T6 or one of its older siblings, T1 -T5; how does it feel in your hands? I started with a Canon T1i and enjoyed learning with it, physically, I believe it is the same as the T6. My only complaints were the placement of the on-off switch on the right side under the function dial, and the location of the shutter release button. I found that I frequently turned the function wheel with my thumb inadvertently when turning on the camera and the shutter button just didn't feel right making it difficult to make a smooth trigger. I eventually upgraded to a 70D which among other things moved the on-off switch to the left side and felt better ergonomically.

The T6 is an OK starter camera if that is all the budget will allow. Don't forget to check the Canon website "Refurbished Shop" to see what you can afford. Unless we are talking about top of the line cameras like the EOS-1D X Mark II, I think most Hogs will tell you shooting technique will effect your ability to capture better images more than hardware. Understand shutter speed, aperture, and ISO, how they interact and practice, practice, practice. Digital "film" is cheep.

Yeah, there have been too many problems/limitations in Mojave for me to use it. Besides, my Macs are from 2011, and that doesn't qualify for the Mojave upgrade.

2011? Thats a relatively new machine in my house. Although I do have one shiny new 2017 MacBook Pro, my other hardware is a 2009 iMac (most used), a 2012 McBook Air (wife), and 2008 MacBook Pro (emergency backup). All are running Mojave without any problems, at least I haven't had any.

I like to maintain the OS at the same versions to keep the interface consistent. Most files reside on a Synology DiskStation and I must admit that older machines have been upgraded to SSDs, Bluetooth 4, and 802.11AC WiFi capabilities.

Your computer architecture is outdated just like mine. My iMac is mid 2011 and like yours will not update to Mohave. However, I still get security updates and High Sierra is still a supported OS (for a while I guess)

I refer you back to my earlier post on page 1.

If you want to make the move to Mojave and have an older Mac, check out http://dosdude1.com/mojave/ Collin created a patch to allow Mojave to run on Unsupported Macs. His page lists known incompatibles, Metal is NOT required.

I have it running on an iMac (27-inch, Late 2009) and a MacBook Pro (15-inch Early 2008) with no problems.

Since you are cruising, check to see what excursions are offered in the glacier area. We recently did the inside passage with Tracy Arm Fjord/Endicott Arm scenic cruising, our excursion departed the ship where it reached its closest point to the glacier. We got significantly (much much) closer to the face of the glacier. We then met back up with then ship in Juneau after a 3-4 hour cruise. A big bonus on our trip was the sighting of humpback whales, including several full breaching (think of the Pacific Life commercials). Have plenty of space on the memory card and be prepared to shoot a continuous burst for a great sequence.

Since I just recently updated my iMac to High Sierra your post intrigued me. Have you resolved your issue? I also shoot RAW/JPEG but haven't done any editing since upgrading. When I inserted my SD card Photos only showed me one "New Photo" although I knew there were two file types. The small box in the corner of the photo indicates there are multiple file types, the "J" indicating Photos is using the JPEG file as the primary. I believe it is related to Apple's belief that you should store the larger RAW files in iCloud retaining only the smaller JPEGs locally.

The first attachment below shows the import window in Photos. I know it is a lousy picture, but that isn't the interest, it was meant only to show you the small box with a J.

The second is a clip from my Library window. When you double-click and open an image to edit, you can then choose to "Use RAW as Original". Thereafter the small box on the thumbnail will show an "R".

If you only import one file type there will be no indication of the file type. The bottom photo is actually a .CR2 RAW file.

I have several of the older versions so I can't comment specially on the smaller V3 design. The second mount is used for the GoPro or binoculars depending on the location. If you are going to be carrying a backpack anyway they are great, they keep the camera secure in front of you and there is no weight on your neck. I normally use it with their Clutch strap for extra security when I am actually using the camera and have their Slide strap for those times when I don't want to take the backpack. The Anchor Links make it easy to reconfigure and the Dual Plate works well with my tripod. I guess I have bought into their system.

Growing up in nearby Buffalo I agree the "best views' are from the Canadian site, and as was pointed out the exchange rate really makes the other side more affordable. Lots to do on the Canadian site, almost too touristy, but MUCH cleaner than the American side.

It gets wet so be prepared, but the only way to really experience the power of the falls is to take the Maid of the Mist boat ride from below.

Eric,
I use a Canon GPS Receiver GP-E2 (~$240) on my 70D. Doesn't tell me what I shot, but does tell me when and where I shot it. Never leave home without it. We leave for an Alaskan cruise in 5 days. When in port, the first shot of the day is always the welcome sign.

I didn't start on COBAL until 1969 but there are only 10 types of people in the world. Those who understand binary and those who do not.
