Everybody has an opinion. Here's mine.

It's for a 10 year old. Whatever you get, she will eventually grow out of it like she grows out of clothes. A simpler camera is both appropriate to her age and hand size. It will give her a lot to work with and learn. She probably won't outgrow the capabilities of a good bridge camera as her first until she has a few years of experience taking hundreds or thousands of pictures. Let her explore her world and photograph what is important to her. Is there a book/used book that explains the camera you want to gift her? Great package deal.

If she asks for help, feedback or to go on a photo shoot with you, you've got a buddy and budding photographer. If the gift is too complicated and confusing for a 10-11 year old, you might stifle her interest and enthusiasm.

My daughter was half the world away and wanted a camera like mine.
I got her the exact same camera and lens brand new and she still has it 40 years later and treasures it. It is not used, film, and do not blame her but she got what she wanted and not some cheap copy or lesser.
It was a Canon FTb so was not a top end camera but was what I had and she wanted one like it.

Sweet! Thanks!

P1000 is massive and awkward compared to the small T series or even an SL2 or 3 which are lighter and smaller than most mirrorless. PS, Canon makes many superb bridge cameras as well but are not interchangable lens like the ones from Nikon or Panasonic thus would be a huge disappointment.
They will also use any lens the OP has which makes for a great grandfather-granddaughter time taking photos and sharing. Forms a real sharing bond and great teaching the love of photography.

Yes but we live 4 hours away. You make good points though... thanks.

I disagree.

Get her a decent bridge camera. The Nikon P1000 will take all the pictures she wants.
Or a Panasonic- a DMC TZ80 looks pretty good.
I just went thru this. I had the Nikon, her uncle had a Canon. We talked to her ... and got her an Instax.
No fuss, no muss. She wanted all her pictures were to be of inside, friends and family. People. Take a few shots, hand some out. Happy girl. YMMV.

Thanks for the input!

Look at good used from KEH, Ebay, B&H or Adorama.
T3i or T4i should be reasonable

Will do!

Get the real camera.
The T series are all good and she can change lenses like a grown up.
Otherwise it will be a disappointment to her.
She will not say it but will remember it the rest of her life.
You can then let her use one of your lenses with you there and see the joy of interchangeable lenses.
Do as you please but anything besides a "real" camera will be internally resented but not shown outwardly.

Very true. Now to find one at a reasonable price and lenses too! Good suggestion.

Anything with MP of 16 or higher and some zoom capabilities would be great. I wouldn’t hesitate to look at Panasonic or Sony too. They all make great bridge cameras. Way to go getting her fascinated. You hopefully will have some great times together on photo field trips.

Thanks for the suggestions!

My grand daughter has been using my Canon Powershot SX280 HS.Last week I let her use my Canon T5i with 55-250 lens.....she loved it! I was thinking of getting her a Canon SX40. I think this would be a better choice with a fixed lens. A lot easier to work with and carry. She is a little peanut of a 10 year old. I found one at B&H for $100. I know its a 2011 but I thought this would be a starting place to see how she likes it. Any suggestions or comments would be great! I would like to keep the cost down. Thanks!

What a nightmare I am experiencing getting my camera body and three lenses back from service.
First attempt “by end of business day”. So much for the “end” part. I was out riding my horse at 10:45 a.m. when they made the first delivery attempt.

Second attempt with same timeframe both my husband and I were home...he outside with the RV running (he does monthly service checks) and me 30’ from the front door tidying our indoor/outdoor porch. He saw nothing and I heard nothing. Obviously the driver didn’t make much of an attempt. I immediately called FedEx to complain and said WTF...how could he have missed us? Offered the option to have package left at local dropzone by 6 p.m.....guess what...package was never dropped.

Called FedEx again. By this time I was losing patience, getting frustrated and increasingly concerned about my expensive gear taking an east coast tour. Was told driver would make second attempt that evening. Three guesses (first two don’t count): no package.

It is now 6 a.m. on Day 3... do I know where my package is? Guess....see previous sentence above.

I am disgruntled, worried and expect to spend the day sitting on my front stoop...in the rain...with signs lining my (longish) driveway saying (in red ink)...hey FedEx guy, I’m here. Call me! Written in caps.

Moral of the story: think twice before requiring a signature. I thought I was doing the prudent thing, but it has come back to bite me in the *ss.

I spent 3 days waiting because they kept updating to the next day! Finally I called the Fedex center near us(25 mi away)and confirmed they had the package and drove there to get it!

I am happy to report that the eagles are back in their nest and it looks like they are tending to eggs. Altho I cannot see the eggs, there is always one eagle present in the nest and that means ... egg(s). In the second photo, the top eagle is about to fly off while its mate is about to settle down to keep the eggs protected. Both photos are at about 100 yards with the Nikon 500mm PF lens.

Unless you want to greatly improve your bokah performance. One of your zooms would probably do. Take your camera to a photo shop along with one of your current zooms that would cover the 85mm FL and do some wide open shots (available lighting) with preferrable pinpoint highlights in the background and compare the zoom with the proposed 85mm prime you're interested in. If the results are just a blurred background w/o round spots or donuts than it would make sense to me. If the bokah is very close to your zoom, I see no point.

You can always make up for low level lighting by upping the ISO with a ZOOM but there is nothing like a nice, clean blurred background in some cases. At that point, the 85mm prime might make a lot of sense to me

Good luck, Alan
