Periodically a topic arises which lends itself to those who wish to point out the difference between REAL photographers and those who succumb to GAS. I take pictures because I enjoy the process. “Enjoying the process” includes using gear that is well designed and functions as intended. It also includes capturing images that I like, and that I can share. I fail to see the value of criticizing those of us who seek the best gear they can afford. Live and let live, enjoy and let enjoy. Alan, with regard to the RRS Panning Clamp PC-LR you state that: “It doesn’t provide any correction for leveling.”. That is correct but incomplete. The Panning Clamp is usually not attached to a tripod by itself. When attached to a ballhead it can be leveled via adjustment of the ballhead, which then gives a level plane for panning. If the panning clamp replaces the ballhead clamp, that would provide for a simpler and lighter configuration than having a leveling base under a ballhead. Your thoughts? Frank

Put a panning clamp on top of a ball head, and you have the same thing as a leveling base. I was all set to buy the leveling base, and RRS talked me out of it. It's heavier and bulkier, but I had the ball head already, and the ball head has a much wider range of motion, i.e. leveling capability.

Moonhawk, and others who commented on my post, thanks for your thoughts. I am inclined to go with the option of adding the panning clamp to a ball head as suggested by Moonhawk. Short of having a leveling base + panning clamp on a tripod all the time, it’s the simplest and fastest option I’ve seen. Frank

To create a level platform for panning, what is your evaluation of the RRS Leveling Base TA 2U vs. the Panning Clamp PC-LR on a ball head?

It's refreshing to discuss contrary opinions today with someone who does not go off the rails with insults but attempts to be responsive. Congratulation!

I totally agree with your last point. An environment in which issues can be discussed and debated without resorting to personal attacks is not only refreshing but a blessing too. I appreciate your post. Frank

A different way of thinking about freedom was proposed several decades ago by BF Skinner, behavioral psychologist at Harvard. Instead of thinking of freedom as all or nothing, he suggested we think of freedom in terms of more or less. More specifically, if an individual has learned several options for a given situation, that person has more freedom than another person who has learned only 1 or 2 response options for the same situation. So, freedom varies individually along a continuum.

"The problem with morality is that it is always someone else's"

Sounds wise but, is it?

We are raised within a society that gives us a set of parameters. This influences all our lives without question. The dilemma resides on how we accept it, modify it or reject it.

We always react to someone else's morale, but we do make our own. In that we are 'free' to the extent that we make our own decisions to accept or refuse that morality. Still, considering that we are influenced anyway, where is our true freedom?

I have no answer to questions like this. I just keep turning them in my head to understand better and possibly offer an answer.

I have none. (It was true in 2010, it is still true 11 years later)

For a unique drive consider the “Haul Road” north from Fairbanks to the Arctic Circle or farther. Follow it far enough and you cross the Brooks Range summit. Really wild country.

For those who have adapted Nikon F mount lenses to a Z body, do you get the same or better quality images as before with F cameras? I ask this because I would only consider a Z body if I could use my existing F mount lenses with the same or better outcomes. Frank

First, for what it’s worth, I took your original statement that Z lenses are superior to F lenses as an opinion.
Second, the absence of negative information (as in prove they are not) is not proof that one is superior.
Third, I don’t have an opinion on Z vs F lenses. Frank

A few data points:

The Z-mount lenses are superior.

Canon is already discontinuing the manufacture of some of their EF lenses. There's no news yet on Nikon's plans.

Nikon's FTZ adapter supports F-mount lenses, with some limits for older AF capable designs.

In the realm of speculation: nothing about your F-mount lenses will change from owning a mirrorless body (disregard rumors to the otherwise).

When you express concern about 'support', do you mean repair? Other?

My concern includes repair/service, but also continued manufacture of F mount lenses. Frank
