Why "unfortunately"? Asking for help here didn't help. It's seems fortunate to me that there is a place that he can go to actually get help. (imho) Harry

So real photographers never takes one camera and one lens?
ROFL.

My old friend pro Charlie Harbutt shot a Leica body with a normal lens. I guess that
he wasn't a "real" photographer. Maybe a surreal photographer? Or an unreal photographer?
Or maybe a fishing reel photographer? :-) Now me, I'm real. I have three bodies, two full frame; the
other, is one of them 1.6 ones that was my first digital. I still have the d*mned thing, it lives in a drawer in my office, haven't used it in years.

You old guys and your antique PCs. Back in the day, I did all my work on an IBM Mainframe, that was a long time ago, over 50 iirc. If I remember correctly, it was housed in Baker Hall on the main Ohio State campus. Can't remember the number, I'm 90 and my memory's shot. Then we went to a IBM 6--, housed in our own shop (The OSU Center for Human Resorce Research) with our own people running it. Faster turn around (a slower machine but lots less competition for time). Then I got an Apple Lisa (remember them?) Terrible machine, Apple then came out with the Mac and stopped supporting the Lisa. Left me with an expensive doorstop! We were running a project for the State of Ohio so I gave it to them. IIRC it was the first PC in that Dept., whatever the hell dept. it was. We were doing the first Ohio Occupational Survey. part of the national occupational survey. The Ohio RFP included a statement that the proposal had to indicate knowledge of a particular OSU Prof's work and since he was in my Dept, I got him to come in on the proposal with me. I figured that nobody could beat that and I was correct. <g> Harry

Hi - I am new to this forum. Also, I am relatively new to using a real camera for photography. I have used relatively cheap point-and-shoot and cell phone cameras for years. I jumped into the deep end of the pool with the purchase of a slightly used fZ6ii (thank you KEH). I am very excited about learning to use this amazing piece of equipment. Does anyone have any advice for a novice to get up to speed quickly? And thanks in advance!

Well, I will give you some specific advice. Start with a reasonable ISO, I prefer 100 if I can get it, a hangover from my 35mm days. Then try to shoot at f4, 5.6 or 8 and maybe at 125, if that balances. Why these? well, most lens are "better" in the mid range so let's say 5.6. 125 will stop most normal movement. Then set your ISO at whatever you need to in order to make that 5.6, 125 work. As you gain experience you can move these around as you want/need. For example if you are shooting anything that moves rapidly, you might prefer 250 instead of 125. And if you do, you'll have to fiddle with your aperture or ISO. And have fun, photography is a great hobby! I started with 35mm a long time ago. I was serving in the 424th FAB in Korea at the time, bought my equipment at a discount through the PX. I started with a Voightlander 35mm, switched to Nikon, now shoot a Canon digital. Why the switch from Nikon to Canon? The answer is lost in the mists of time. :-)

Harry PS I'm sure someone will take exception to something I've said but that's OK, I'm thick skinned. For a while the Chinese were trying to pierce my skin with bullets so words just bounce off me. <g> My advice is "Don't waste your time!" as I'll probably never revisit this thread. I'm 90 and too busy with my hobbies to monitor things I stumble across on the 'net. If you want to improve on my amateur advice, feel free! :-)

I have posted somewhere hat 16 gb of RAM ain't enough. Get 32 or better yet, 64. "You may be right, I may be crazy" but I don't want my CPU going to my hard drive to "make" RAM; that slows everything down. You're investing $$, why stint on RAM? "For a few dollars more...." Harry
Need opinions and advice
I previously posted wanting a $700 (no longer the criterion ) desktop computer for Phoroshop. I have looked at options and would greatly appreciate advice on the following computers that all have 16 gb ram: Is there significant between those listed?
I apologize for my ignorance. I am getting my memory back by relearning after brain surgery. I am appreciative of any and all comments.

I would get more than 16gb of RAM even for general use. The laptop I'm using has 32 and it's not my photoshop computer - I just use it for the internet. The desktop that I use for photoshop has 128 and it works like a charm and never has to go to the hard drive for help!

I'd get 64 if I was you. After all, it's not like RAM is super expensive. Why bring a knife to a gun fight? I can remember back in the '70s, using a small IBM mainframe with 16. Slow as a cow in a horserace. That's when most of us (even the people with computer science degrees) didn't know a hell of a lot. And this was in a research unit at a major university Harry

Beautiful house in great country. I love Charleston! Visited every year when I lived in VA. Always stayed in a lovely old B and B, way S near a park. Of course, that was years ago and at 91, my memory is probably 2/3 gone (or maybe more) so that's all I can tell you. Hell, I can't even remember what street it's on but in an area of big old homes. I had a favorite restaurant too, named after a black woman iirc. Harry

Of course, there is a 70-200 f4 as well. I have one and when I need a good image, it's my go to lens! Harry PS If I want to shoot a moving dog (I'm a field trialer), I just bump up the ISO some and shoot at maybe 125 and 5.6. You can stop a lot of movement with 125. I used to shoot a lot of dance and there is a moment when a dancer is at the apex of a leap where s/he is almost stationary. Takes some practise to catch that spot but it can be done. Harry

I really hate to switch to Sony BUT I am tired of waiting....and I am not getting any younger.....I am 74!!!

I even sent a letter to Nikon saying that I had been a customer since 1972.....they don't even care!
Poor baby, all of 74. I'm 91 so hang in there. If you switch to Sony you are even dumber than I think you are.

And ooooooo, those Btards didn't respond to your letter, "they don't even care" ROFLMFAO

Go ahead, switch to Sony. But do us all a favor, don't post complaints about them because I promise you, they don't give a good Gd^mn about you either.

When I shot 35mm, I had a Nikon, can't remember the flavor. Got it thru the PX while serving in Korea. When I switched to digital in the dim post Korean past, for some now unknown reason, I went with Canon. Over the years, Canon has worked fine for me. I haven't bought a body in years. Once in a while, I get a new lens. All a real photographer needs in a normal lens on a good body. Zoom with your feet, so what if you miss one shot in a thousand. Harry

Anyone moving from a crop sensor DSLR to an R Series could very well have EF-s lenses that they can't immediately afford to replace with FF lenses. There is a loss of pixels, but for many people that is not a big issue.

When I moved to ff, I bought new lens. If I couldn't have afforded them, I would have stayed with the crop.

Harry PS Buying a new body to use with semi-compatible lens doesn't cure GAS. Not mine anyway!
