HOLY JUMPING TOLEDO! Snapschott, those "dwellings" are very, VERY close to unbelievable, especially the first one. You say that's a moose dropping? What size mooses do you have up there in Alaska, anyways?

and....The guy that built it and lives in it is a retired college prof. that taught engineering.

We have the extra large economy size mooses here on the Kenai

All you folks up in Alaska have such a fantastic canvas to paint your pictures on ! Although you need an assistant with a gun and a bat to keep the bears and mosquitos at bay!Love the shots of the aurora.I was up there a month and never had the opportunity to see it.

Is the Sub in your Avatar the one at OMSI?

Don't sell Oregon short. We lived many years 7 miles out the Vernonia Road (Cater Hill) from Scappoose. We have kids all over that state. If you can avoid Portland, it's a great state. One of the reasons we like Alaska is it reminds us of what Oregon was like years ago. Mosquitos are no bother but I do keep a 12 ga. by the front door just in case.

how did you get the water????? Beautiful.

No trick to it. It is the real color and a decent P&S will capture it. Most of our glacier fed lakes and rivers are that color. It usually is most vivid on overcast days. That is except during breakup when some look the color and consistency of thin concrete.

Thanx

Booooooooo!!!!! It's too cold to go out and take pictures!!!!

I spent some time in Florida years ago and could not take the heat & humidity. Back then I could take off some clothes and nobody minded. If I tried that now I would get arrested for something, I'm sure. Up here, if it gets colder I can always put on more clothes. My camera works pretty good down to -20. Thats as low as I have tried it so far. As you might know, taking photos of the Northern Lights is always a time exposure exercise. The best time for that seems to always be around 3 AM. I admit, it is hard to get out of bed at those tempratures but it sure feels good when you get back in bed when your done. :-D

nice, very envious, especially since the world famous Kenai River flows there. Is it to the right of the scene? I know of several guys who have gone up and pulled out a lot of 50# salmon out of that River.

good going!

Yes, the Kenai would exit on the right in the pix. It then runs to Skilak Lake and then on to Cook inlet. The 50# Kings are great, but it's the Reds (Sockeye) that are the best (IMHO) eating.

Stop makimg want to kill a polar bear to stay warm with its fur!!!!

You can stay just as warm in a Caribou hide and they taste soooooo much better. Besides, -20 is not that cold. The only difference between +20 and -20 is that your nose hairs tickle a lot more and the snow makes a lot more noise when you walk on it. Now take -60 and you have some real cold! :?

Went into hypothermia coma at -45c in the alps, lost my avalanche dog training license and became very sensitive to difference of temperature... so your -20???? Let me kill a polar bear (I like white) wear his fur, kill the first stupid moose that comes near me (if that makes you happy) but after, run back to FL. any problem with THAT????

  :|

I was speaking of -20F, -45C is about the same as -45F if I recall correctly. Any way I have no problems with that. Moose are stupid and are also very, very tasty.

Very lovely! In the first one, did you crop it? It is pretty tight, as in filling the frame. What I think would be cool, and this is just my opinion, is if you did crop it, take the original and make it black and white and then play with the levels to boost the contrast. And to take it to another level, add the photo pop preset in topaz if you have it.

Yes, I did crop it. It was a must due to the distracting stuff on both sides of that old cabin. I was a little lazy in that respect since I did not want to take the time to try to clone out the two areas. I think also that too much cloning becomes obvious. Sorry, no Topaz (?). I only have PE9. Thanks for your comments.

Do you still have the original? If you want, post it and I'll play with it! Topaz is a plugin for photoshop. It's awesome!

Sorry but no. I took that shot in January of 09 and seem to have zapped the original. It started snowing here yesterday so maybe, in the near future, I will return to that village and try that shot again. It is only about 10 miles or so from here. With any luck the beater cars that were there will be gone. The village has a lot of clutter as you might be able to note in the attached photo. If I do get another shot at it I will post it and you can try your magic.
