Thanks everyone for taking a look and for your fun comments. Something I had never seen before for sure.

Was photographing her at Lynx Lake in Prescott. She came up from a dive all frantic ... short flights, swimming in circles and diving. I guess it let go. I didn't notice it until I got home. Didn't know cray fish were in their diet.

Same thing happened to mine when I got home from Thanksgiving. Could not adjust using usual methods. Finally found that the graphics card adapter was updated on 11/25. Rolled back to previous version and all is well.

Thank you all for taking the time to look. Fun digging around in the old stuff, but I have to admit that I don't miss those hours in the darkroom.

The first photo cracks me up. Kids having uncontrolled fun on a jungle gym (that's what they called them when I was a kid). No helmets, no safety mat, no helicopter moms.

LOL .... "Jungle Gym" .... could not remember that name, Thanks!!

I've been going through my 'pre-digital' storage closet and came across these. Haven't found the negatives yet (these were scanned from prints I had made). I'm guessing late 1970s with an Olympus OM-1 and a 400 speed Ilford film. Most with a 50mm and, perhaps, a 135mm Olympus lens (still have them all). The last was in Boston, all of the others in Central Park NY.

I'd recommend OAT- Overseas Adventure Travel -- www.oattravel.com
We have traveled with them on three separate occasions. SE Asia, Europe and Africa. OAT limits the number of people to 12-15.

I agree, OAT is excellent particularly the small groups. Went to SE Asia and Peru with them. BUT, they are not a photography specific company. I would probably use them for Africa but not if photography was my main purpose. Great company!

You're starting to get it but are still missing half.

Internal Focus and Internal Zoom are NOT interchangeable descriptions of a lens moving.

Internal Focusing means that there is no lengthening or shortening of the lens when you are focusing.

Internal Zoom means there is no lengthening or shortening of the lens when you are zooming.

The Tokina 24-70mm 2.8 does have internal focusing, meaning that when you are adjusting the focus on a subject the front of the lens will not move.

But that is only for focusing it DOES NOT zoom internally meaning that when changing focal lengths or "zooming" the front element of the lens will move.
You're starting to get it but are still missing ha... (show quote)

Thanks, appreciate the clarification!

You seem to think purchasing all these lenses is going to help your photography. Take some photography classes and learn about the basics of photography. Start taking pictures and quit worrying about what new zoom lens to purchase.

I remain baffled by bozos in this group. WTF!! What, in my question gave you the idea that I wanted to buy lens' to improve my photography. And what in that message encourages you to tell me to take photography courses and to "Start taking pictures and quit worrying about what new zoom lens to purchase." You know nothing about me or my photography skills, etc. All I was looking for was a term for a "phenomenon" ... zoom lens' that lengthen when zooming and those that don't.

So, before you crawl back in your hole, the answer was internal focus and/or internal zoom. Geeze!!!!!

Thank you all .... mystery solved. My apologies for the word "issue" implying something was wrong. Not an issue, just an observation. Internal focus/internal zoom describes the "observation." I also meant Tokina 24-70 not Tamron and I have determined that it is of the internal focus/internal zoom type (does not change length). Unfortunately the use of the term doesn't seem to be consistent. For example (in B & H) the Nikon 70-200 2.8 is described as having internal focusing and "does not change length." In the description of the Nikon 24-120 4.0 it also says it has internal focusing but it, in fact, does change length when zooming (I have them both).

At any rate, thanks to haroldross, larrepage and robertjerl for the explanations!!

Hi,
Wasn't sure if there is a term that describes this issue. Some like my Nikon 200-500 extend when zooming. Others like my Nikon 70-200 and my 2 Tokinas (12-24 and 20-35) do not. Can't find a term in the lens description that describes that. Was actually wondering about the Tamron 24-70 f2.8. Thanks.

Hi Dale, I too am a sucker for the GBH but probably not for it's cooperation as the ones around my area are extremely opposed to human intervention hence my Nikon P900 which I use to 'get close'.

Love your images, particularly the first one which provides competition between the reeds (cattails?) and the Heron. It almost blends in with it's surroundings.

Welcome aboard from another GB lover and newbie in Bucks County, PA.

Thanks Alan, ours aren't too skiterish, but the 200-500 Nikon does help!
