There are no new rules for CS6 or CC even the earlier or most newer version. I think you can make a google for it, Although Adobe has already shown these issues long ago, so you can reach them too. Otherwise, here the specific way you could try. https://helpx.adobe.com

I think you can open it as a smart object just through your way, right click on "Edit in" and choose "Open as Smart Object in Photoshop.." After opening the image in Photoshop, just double-click on the Smart Object icon in the image layer to open it with Camera Raw.
