Agree with all the comments above. I live in San Diego and just put panels on my house. Whatever you do, don't lease. It is a huge money maker for the banks who get to claim the 30% federal tax rebate along with your interest payments. Nowadays the cost is way down; we will have saved the cost of the panels in 4.5 years. Check out the online reviews of companies and go with a reputable company that has a roofing contractor license. Spend a little more on the most efficient panels (currently SUNPOWER). Good luck!

The lack of a flip out lcd screen was a deal breaker for me. I have a d5300 and although I only use the live view flip out screen on occasion, it has allowed me to get several excellent photos that I never would have otherwise captured. It is most useful when the camera needs to be held very high / overhead (as in crowds while traveling) or very low (on the ground with landscapes and a wide angle lens). Of course you can always get on your belly to look through the viewfinder...

DNG can be a lifesaver if you buy a new camera with a new raw format that is not supported by your older photo processing software. Any raw format can be converted to DNG which will be readable by virtually any photo processing program. The DNG converter is updated more frequently than most photo processing programs. It saved me for 3-6 months when I bought my new nikon body (with brand new NEF format a few years ago.

I have had this exact issue and the problem was, as mentioned above, the embedded jpeg is the first image to be displayed. If the Raw NEF is opened for editing then the full RAW image (actually a jpeg rendition as well) is displayed and is flat / dull in appearance. The fix, if desired, is to routinely apply a pre-set group of edits to make it look like the jpeg. If this is the problem, it should only be an issue with RAW files and not jpegs.

Absolutely. It doesn't really affect the screen resolution and can prevent big scratches. While hiking over the summer I stowed my nikon in my day pack then my wife tossed in some souvenir rocks that she had collected. Yikes! When I pulled the camera out, there were 2 large scratches on the rear lcd but they didn't penetrate through the screen protector and the lcd was saved! I think that you can buy decent screen protectors for most cameras. You never know where scratches are lurking until they happen...

If GPS is on, it too will drain the battery.

Acdsee is excellent and very easy to use. Also, way faster than LR, especially for viewing photos. Has virtually all the features of LR plus layers if you want to use them. They offer a free trial download.

The Nikon WMU wifi app works pretty well but only syncs with a mobile device such as a phone or Ipad. It will not sync with a laptop. I find it useful for sharing photos when travelling without a laptop. It is a quirky app that has a mind of it's own. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't...

Greetings all. I just received my Nikon D5300 body back from Nikon repair in Los Angeles. The internal battery / capacitor had failed after about 1.5 years. The repair invoice indicates replacement of a circuit board, sensor cleaning, and test of exposure. What can / should I do to check that everything is working fine? I don't want to find out that there is an issue after the repair warranty runs out. It seems to be fine on my preliminary check. Thanks!

I had the same problem with my last pc with Windows Vista. I could not fix it on my own (I can repair most of my computers) so brought it in and turns out that there was a video card issue. The computer was old and I wound up getting rid of it rather than replacing the card....

I brought a lightweight Tripod for use on the boat from our rooms balcony. It really helped with photos of glaciers and landscapes from the boat. It was not useful for excursions.
