This little guy played and ate in the trees outside my deck. Slowly he started to climb on to
the deck in search for peanuts that I left for him. Had a great time watching him and another chipmunk run laps around the branches.

My Kentucky chipmunk, pic from a couple days ago. Chip sat in snow about 30 minutes guarding at least 3 storage underground holes that a neighbor chipmunk was trying to check out.

I really liked my 18-140 lense also. When I got my Nikon 18-300, it kinda replaced several lenses and is now my walk around lens. And now I am eyeing a 18-400 lense.

I am thinking of buying this lens, has anyone got any experience with this lens, and is it any good.
I don't have a good zoom lens which I sometimes find I need.

My opinion: B&H has on sale a Sigma 70-200 2.8 for $1079 that I bought for my Nikon, has several features on it. It does a fine job, whereas new Nikon 70-200 2.8 is about $2300. You might want to take a look at it. DanOliver

My Nikon 18-300 is the 3.5-5.6 model, a little more expensive than one talked about above.

It's important to understand that TELEconverters are intended to be used with telephoto lenses, and a small selection of zooms. They are not intended to work with wide angle, normal, or wide angle to telephoto zoom lenses.

There is nothing wrong with using a converter with a fast tele lens - like a 200mm F2 or 300mm F2.8, and you can get great results with a 1.4 on a 70-200mm F2.8. Some lenses have dedicated converters. But not the 17-50.

And if you shoot Nikon with Nikon lenses, of course your best option is to use a Nikon TC. But if you use a Sigma lens, the best choice for a TC is Sigma, regardless of what camera it is on.

Thanks Gene51 for ur information. I wish all my equipment was from one mfg. this teleconverter situation was a lot of lack of knowledge and not wanting to spend that much. I am in my 70’s and on fixed income. Just trying to enjoy what I can afford and happy for those with nice equipment. Part of equation is always the photographer.

Yes you CAN mount that older style 2x TC to your lens, but it is NOT recommended as it will only work from 40 to 50mm. If you zoom wider than 40mm the rear lens element will contact the TC element and damage one or both the elements.
For more reach there is never a good substitute for simply getting a longer lens.

thanks MT Shooter. First, I got Sigma 70-200 2.8 with free APO 2x teleconverter and secondly the Sigma 17-50 which was more affordable than anything in Nikon line. I was hoping the hole between 50 and 70 on my lens would not be so deep or by chance the 2x teleconverter would work !

Thanks, I sure do need to increase distance to 100 from 50 for DX equivalent of 150 shooting indoor basketball closeups.

What do you plan on using the non-typical range (70-200mm) of the zoom for?

I purchased a Nikon 18-300 3.5-5.6 used that is a great walk-around DX lens with intermediate reasonable distance.

Last week I ordered a Sigma 17-50 2.8 with expedited shipping. It took B&H three days to ship.

I like the book by Darrell Young "Mastering the Nikon D500". The book explains the settings in 642 pages that is explained in detail and understandable. And with each topic and setting, Darrell Young recommends settings he uses.
