And what is your strategy for dealing with a double drive failure? Always a good question to ponder and be prepared for.

As I said earlier the RAID backs up to a USB drive weekly. It also performs health checks on all of the drives.

I’d rather risk a (very unlikely) double drive failure than swapping a bunch of USB drives around. There’s a reason that data centers use RAIDs for data storage

Swapping around a bunch of drives seems way more complicated than a RAID to me. With a TAID your files are available to any computer in the house or via the Internet if you set it up correctly.

Get one with 5 drives and there is always a hot swap drive available if one fails.

If you are thinking of a drobo, then forget it and look at Synology - industrial, scalable NAS at affordable prices. Better company, great support, no reason to consider second best. No, I don't own one, but if I did that would be the one. I've installed a dozen of them for friends and colleagues, and I only have great things to say about them.

But this is not a backup solution - it is redundancy. A proper backup solution involves a bit more. Too much to go into here - but if you google "what is a good backup strategy" you'll learn a lot.

Another thumbs up for Synology - I've had mine for several years and it just works. It will do a weekly backup to a USB drive that you can also store offsite.

I sold my D850 and glass and purchased a Z7ii and new lenses. Very happy with the purchase and performance of the new camera and glass. The weight savings alone was worth it and the images are outstanding. The new Nikon glass is incredible.

My ten-year-old weather station has finally measured its last temperature. Wondering if any fellow hoggers have a recommendation for a replacement? Looking for windspeed, temp, humidity, etc., with wireless remote. I've heard Ambient is good; any others I ought to consider?

I also purchased an Ambient 2000 to replace a 10 year old Davis weather station. The console is great and it also can connect with Weather Underground and and Ambient. There is also an app so you can monitor from anywhere. In addition I added some extra temperature/humidity sensor and a lightning detector. I'd recommend it.

I'm going to Iceland on a photography trip for 11 days with Natural Habitat. We'll be there in July. I have a Nikon D600 and a D5500. Any suggestions as to lenses I should bring and do I need a tripod?

Thanks

I've been 3 times; last time was July 2019. I took 16-35, 24-120 and 70-200. I did bring a tripod and filters. If you can manage it I'd say take the tripod. Also bring a sleep mask, it never gets dark in July. Expect to shoot sunsets at midnight and sunrises at 3 AM.

Enjoy your trip; I can't wait to go back, it's a fascinating country.

A NAS system is not a good answer for files you are actively processing as speed are restricted as compared to TB3. Best of luck.

I don't disagree with your statement. I normally copy all my working files to a local drive and them move them to my NAS in Lightroom when I'm done. It sure beats messing around with multiple external drives.

Stop messing around with external drives and get a NAS.

Synology makes the best NAS devices in the industry.

I agree - I've been running a Synology for several years.

I also recommend the RRS 34L. I have had it in salt water many times and has been stated it's easy to disassemble to clean. You'll pay a little more but it will last forever. The company is also very easy to deal with. I also can recommend the RRS BH-55 ball head.

I'm pretty happy with my FStop pack. My favorite feature about it is that it opens from the back.I have the Loka model.

Another vote for F-Stop. Opening from the back is great - when you put it back on the dirt is on the outside. I use the Loka also and it carries a ton of gear.
