hi team=looking for ideas re purchase of a new backpack for hiking -currently using a Kata or general backpack neither which suits purpose -Kata is well made but uncomfortable and roams around shoulders whilst carrying.
and standard hiking pack does not have protection for gear.

size 30L ? and from experience must have waist and sternum straps

I generally carry a DSLR a couple of lenses and a pair of binoculars - tripod plus usual snacks and flask of coffee/water.

there is obviously lots of advice on YouTube and other media formats with pros and cons on most bags reviewed
but looking for advice/ideas on 1st hand experience

There are thousands to choose from. I have had good luck with the Domke but, it may no longer be in production. Another that may be worth checking out is the Peak Design.

Have you looked at LowePro? I've got a few of their backpacks and found their quality and design to work for my purposes.

Ditto on Gene's recommendation for LowePro. I've been happily using several of their backpacks for years.

with current lockdown obviously shops shut so cannot "try on " I have never heard of Domke so will do a search - Lowepro appear to change models by the month and they have so many ones on the market it has been difficult too research = any particular model you particularly liked Gene ?

Another vote for LowePro. I have the 450AW which I use for my medium format gear with tripod. So far, it's held up well

Before I got old and lazy and fat I did a LOT of backpacking. I can tell you for a fact that external frame packs hold more gear, more weight and provide more protection for the contents than these new fangled internal frame "soft" packs. I carried Kelty packs. Don't even know if they are available these days but I see them every now and then in used sports shops and even yard sales.

good evening team - many thanks for response - I am leaning towards a Lowepro protactic 350 aw 11

it appears to be well thought of by media reviews -although the peak design everyday 30L does catch the eye but looks more of an urban/city/flight bag -not seen one in real life - - Jim the think tank gets good reviews on you tube - I don't know if they sell them in uk and assume if purchase from USA it will arrive around xmas time with current issues ?

once again many thanks its appreciated and would much rather take advice from guys in the field than paid for media reviews

Hi Ron

I am in the UK and have a Thinktank Rotation180 Panorama 22L which I have only used a couple of times. I have been thinking of selling as I am no longer able to hike much and only carry a small camera when I do. If you are interested (it may be too small if you are looking for 30L) pm me.

Think Tank Photo has a secondary brand, Mindshift. Check out the Backlight Series of backpacks:

"BACKLIGHT® SERIES
Backpacks are superior for carrying heavy gear for long distances, but access has always been a problem. Also, traditional front-loading backpacks get wet and dirty when placed on the ground.

The BackLight Series of camera backpacks, with a rear-panel compartment for photo gear, allows you to access your gear without taking off the pack. You can change lenses or just snap a quick photo by simply by spinning the bag to the front of your body while the waist belt is still secured. Rear-panel access also adds security when traveling since your camera gear is protected behind your back."

https://www.thinktankphoto.com/collections/backlight-series

I have the Backlight 26L and absolutely LOVE it. Check it out.

Best Regards,

BT

Before you puch go on that order take a look at Atlas Packs. They only make two but designed by a shooter with a lot of input by those that wear them everyday.

Yep, Kelty is still around and still makes quality gear and I still carry a Kelty, but there are many good brands out there including internal frames that are rugged and very well designed (check out Osprey). I, like you, think slightly differently when someone says backpack. I still backpack with the scouts and carry my photography gear, but I have to carry food, clothing, tent, sleeping bag, cooking equipment, etc. too. While it would be great to have a backpack that could accommodate both photography and true backpacking needs, it would be so specialized and expensive if designed for both. So when I'm out for the day shooting, I have a backpack just for photography gear. When I go backpacking, I carry my Kelty and put all my lenses in their own cases and carefully pack everything else so that it is protected and accessible. It ends up making my backpack much heavier than I would like for backpacking, but part of my purpose is to get out and take pictures, so I'm okay with the extra load.

Another vote for Lowepro. I use the Pro Tactic 350 AW II. It holds everything I need; camera body w/lens, 3 extra lenses, flash, and tripod.

82% of nearly 3000 folks with 1st hand experience on this back pack gave it 5 stars. I would believe these folks before the sometimes true facts given on this site.
