Thinking about going for a ride on a narrow gauge train in Durango, Colorado in late May. Wondering if anyone here has "been there done that" ? Any do's or don'ts advice would be much appreciated!

I suggest you spend more time learning how the aperature, shutter speed and ISO triangle all come into play. That knowledge will enable you to answer all of your own questions.

How far away is your definition of "a great distance? If it's little more than a speck to the naked eye then no lens at any cost will render the sharp image that you're hoping to achieve. Cosmic radiation background is one of the major limiting factors.

Back in the late-eighties when I was stationed at NAS Chase Field near Beeville, TX. I would occasionally spend my leisure time playing the on-base 9-hole course. It was a fairly challenging course with three large ponds on it. As it was, a member of the construction battalion would suppliment his income by wading into the shallow waters, (pillow case in hand) and retrieve lost balls then clean them up and sell them 3 for a dollar. They all seemed to perform just as well as my new more expensive ones. Unfortunately, he wasn't in business long due to the discovery of a pair of water moccasins in one of the ponds.
