A wife says to her husband,
"Could you please go shopping for me and buy one carton of milk and if they have avocados, get 6."
A short time later the husband comes back with 6 cartons of milk.
The wife asks him:
"Why did you buy 6 cartons of milk?"
He replied:
"They had avocados."

If you're a woman, I'm sure you're going back to read it again! Men will get it the first time.

No one is saying what really happened. The husband screwed the order up so he wouldn't be asked to run errands again. Now.....tell the truth!

Thanks for the laugh. And not far from the truth, as far as I am concerned. I will be sending it on.........cause I know others that are going to find it funny and somewhat truthful too. Personally, I stop at learning my cameras and keeping up with my computer and its software. Can't handle the rest, nor do I want to.

If the bird has some separation from the background, you'll get a nice blur at that distance. Check the first two shots here:

Those are really nice. Like the pp too. Then the shutter speed is only going to effect the sharpness when you have a long focal point? Do you shoot in manual then? Here is one of my birds. While I am at it and you have a lot of experience with the SX50. Have you ever had the plastic come off the barrel? I learned a valuable lesson not to lift the camera by the barrel. The plastic piece came off. Camera still works fine but not sure whether to try to glue it myself (looks easy) or have it done professionallly.

It's the focal length that gave you your blurred background (215 mm = 1200 mm in a full-frame camera). Your shutter speed change did cause your aperture to change, so there might be a slight difference in the amount of blur you see. Feel free to post 'em both here :) (with store original selected).

The reason you didn't see more aperture range in my examples is because the SX50 only has a few choices, and those choices become even fewer at the telephoto end.

Note the list of aperture settings (from the user guide) below my first remarks.

If I haven't been clear, please let me know. I don't want to steer someone in the wrong direction :)

You might try some controlled tests, like I did, to help you get a better feel for how the settings work.

You were clear. Just my mind is not. I should have downloaded your examples because now that I did I can see more of a difference especially in the last one. All my backyard bird pictures are at 215. But I think maybe some of what I am missing is how far the bird is from the background. That differs.

Linda,
I am pretty ignorant about this and trying to learn. I have an SX50 and looked back at a couple bird shots. Bird on fence and background is garage at back of lot behind me. 1/80, f8 and 400 iso the other is bird on fence with trees at back of lot behind me. 1/60, 6.5 and 640. Both are taken at 215 mm. Both have quite blurred backgrounds. Does the shutter speed make any difference or is it totally the mm length. Because in your examples I didn't see much difference with aperature change. Or am I missing the point??

Of course in the Victorian age, post mortem pictures were the thing to do. Lots of info on the Internet about that. As far as thinking of taking pictures all the time, I have always been interested in nature but now I am constantly thinking about how the clouds or the water or the trees would frame up. I recently took a trip and as I drove along the road, I noticed all the town's buildings and farms that would make a great picture. Everyplace I went on my vacation became a photo opp. So I always had two things to look forward to. The activity and the photo I was going to take of it. LOL I think it has made me more aware and appreciative of my surroundings and besides, it is fun. Like someone else said, just wish my pictures were as great as they are in my mind's eye.

I've included a couple of close-ups of work on the bridles.

Yes that was a wonderful time. FDR instituted SS, WPA and other government programs to help those most impacted by the depression. The right was shown for what it was a fraud!

We need that spirit today, instead we have the needy rallying for the rich and attacking the programs President Obama is trying to institute.

Strange comments coming from the right re this video!

I was commenting on the song and love of country that it stirred. Not the politics. Guess you are one that just likes to stir the pot. How can the country ever come together when people use any excuse to blast others and get an argument going?

Even though I love the red sails in number 2, number 1 just seems more balanced and the color of the water seems more natural.

The quilt squares are called "Barn Quilts" and it is an interesting phenomenon, especially when you see a dilapidated old barn with a beautiful barn quilt attached. Lots of possibilities. In some areas we think that there are "art associations" that work with people in displaying barn quilts but we don't think that is true in all areas.

I called them quilt squares because down there I saw some on sheds. I actually went to a class to learn to paint small ones (12x12). I only got mine 1/2 finished but plan to hang it on a wood fence if I ever get it done. I wouldn't mind going back if we had a photo shoot in that area.

Last summer I pedaled through some of the villages of Van Buren County and look forward to getting back to that countryside too. Its worth a Google "Villages of Van Buren County." Some real interesting little river towns in that countryside.

I spent a weekend down there last summer. Besides the river towns I found some interesting old dilapidated buildings out in the country. I also noticed quilt squares painted on outbuildings, although I don't know locations.
