Once upon a time, long, long ago I found myself in this situation. I was photographing shiny beetles and other insects for some grad students. I wound up using an egg(s) by carefully removing the top 1/2 inch with a razor and then emptying the egg and rinsing and drying it. then I would cut a slot in the side for the rule and push a pin through the bottom to mount the insect. I placed a ring light on the table and mounted the egg on a small lump of clay in the center. Of course I ate the egg, I am from Iowa after all.
