I wonder what the landscape looks like today?

This was shot in 2022. Yes things have changed since she blew her top, but there is still a long ways to go.

Also 2022, the farther you get from the mountain the more recovery you see.

Five days after St Helens blew it's top, I went down and flew over Spirit Lake in a Chinook helicopter. Here are a few of the shots I got. I shot B&W which didn't really matter because everything was gray anyway.

These are big trees, but they look like "Pick up Sticks".

(Download)

The water in Spirit lake was 90 degrees and there was snow on top of the mud flows in the lake.

(Download)

The river turned into a mud flow.

(Download)

More big trees looking out the back of the Chinook helicopter.

(Download)

Steam, log jams, snow, mud all mixed together.

The lake at the base of the mountain.

(Download)

Looks more like the moon.

(Download)

Spirit Lake and the bare hills.

The roads are much easier to see after the trees came down. There were animal tracks zig zagging back and forth as if they were lost and not sure of which way to go.

More bare hills.

Ah.... So it's ok to come from the quadrant, but not have a line coming from the corner. I can't use the one from the show because a) it's not mine and b) for some reason, it won't let me retrieve the full image, just a poorly cropped version for the virtual show....

I will use a pic of mine as an example. Please if you could recommend a crop that would be appropriate so I understand and stop sending in stuff from the corner:) Thank you all for your patience and help.

I have heard this as a general rule but do at times break it. I think it is more important in this shot as the reed is so bright and our eye is drawn to the brighter areas anyway. Here are a couple ways I would suggest for cropping it without having the reed come straight from the corner.

PS Also, it is even more important when the line is going off the right side as it draws us away from the main subject and off the picture.

Thanks, I too will be there soon. I grew up in the valley shown in your 4th picture. I spent a lot of time at the Bison Range back in the day as we had lots of family and school gatherings in the picnic area as well as taking lots of visitors through the park.
If you find yourself in the area in early October they bring the bison down to the corrals and work them (give them shots, cull the heard and chip them to keep track of the lineage etc. ).
It is called the Round Up if you google it you can get the exact dates.

Howard,

Thanks a lot for your cooperation and working with me to purchase the lens foot. I appreciate your quick responses and getting it shipped out quickly. It looks like new and I am sure I will get lots of use out of it.

How did you shoot the "spirits"? Love the shot!

I had the camera on a tripod and it was set for a long exposure and I was slow getting into place so I was still moving when the shutter opened.

I reshot and stayed still in the image where I am not fuzzy.

Thanks for asking.

Absolutely beautiful. I am also interested in what kind of fossils?

Thanks for your comment and this is what google says about the fossils:
What kind of fossils are in John Day Fossil Beds?
Image result for what kind of fossils do they have at the John Day fossil beds
Fossils found in the John Day Strata include a wide variety of plants and more than 100 species of mammals, including dogs, cats, oreodonts, saber-toothed tigers, horses, camels, and rodents. The Blue Basin and the Sheep Rock unit contain many of these same fossils, as well as turtles, opossums, and large pigs.
And: Years of plant and animal evolution and a collection of 40,000 fossils that represent one of the two most complete fossil records in the world.

Painted Hills is located within the John Day River basin, a U.S. national monument in Wheeler and Grant counties in east-central Oregon. Distinguished by varied stripes of red, tan, orange, and black, this area preserves a sequence of past climate change.

The varied colors of the Painted Hills are beautiful at all times of the day, but are best lit for photography in the late afternoon. Changing light and moisture levels drastically affect the tones and hues visible in the hills. The seasons can also change the look of the Painted Hills radically. Spring often brings yellow wildflowers that grow in open areas and sometime even in the ripples of the hills. Winter can blanket the hills in a white coat, concealing the vibrant hues until the snow melts, revealing interspersed stripes of gold and red.

After a long dry summer there was a lot of dust that would have muted the colors. So seeing rain in the forecast, we waited until the end of our trip to visit the Painted Hills and I think it made the colors much more vibrant.
.

Rain the previous day cleaned up a lot of the dust and really intensified the colors.

The rolling hills with their vibrant colors really stand out.

Layer upon layer upon layer of varying color.

Some areas lean toward more yellows and others have more red.

The top of the hill looks pretty normal but anywhere that has eroded out reveals some intense color.

Following the road a sign says Red Hill, a mile or two past the sign you find this hill.

They have a walking trail where you can really get in close and see that it is more clay than lava rock.

Wow, nice work. Makes me want to go out & purchase a Leica M10 Monochrome!

Go for it, but you don't need to, these were shot on a Nikon D810 with a nikon 24-120 f4 on a tripod. Shot in RAW and processed in Lightoom and Photoshop and converted to B&W in Photoshop.

Very nice images! Did you use IR converted camera!

No, these are not IR, just color shots converted to B&W in photoshop. I think the plants and clouds make it lean towards the look of IR.
