As long as it takes you to get out there and Practice More Practice + more Practice , that's when talent will take over, some need more then others but if you have a passion for it , it will be easy to learn .

I had a seasoned photojournalist who shot for the AP as my mentor.
3 years of personal one-on-one training.
He got me into newspaper and magazines, doing a documentary for the Army, producing professional presentations (the Army uses 2 of them now) sent me on assignments that I couldn't believe I was on. This guy was connected and he used his connections for me.
After all of that he began pushing me hard. Nothing allowed in editing pics except for cropping and toning.
Then he hooked me up with a mentor who approached photography from an entirely different approach. It was as different as night and day. For 2 years I learned studio and various editing programs, I loved most of it, and some of it drove me nuts. And he had me write a couple of photo classes to teach in the technical college of the university.
I have about 60 hours of undergraduate and graduate classes in photography. and now that I am retiring I am thinking about returning to school and getting a degree in photography.

How long does it take to learn photography? I don't know. Who defines the actual time in your life when you have learned it?

My experience with canon was not good I had the pixma pro 10 , other then eating ink like no tomorrow, It's quality did not compare with Epson printers , drinking ink is one problem but wasting ink is another. Like your case maybe a bad apple in the bunch , for epson and canon, who knows.

I took a portrait photography course at a college here some time ago and they had the large model Epson printers that they used. The instructor said that they frequently jammed and the jets had to be cleaned frequently. They began using some Canon printers and haven't had any problems. Just sayin'! I've been using Canons and haven't had any problems.

Now that I like to hear! Now that I know the 2200 is older by 6 years I am leaning to the R1900 only used a dozen times or less , paying 200 Canadian, for it, so I will give it a go, 2200 I have tested and it does give good images but have to adjust colors brighter as it prints darker then screen , p.s. screen is calibrated regularly.

I am somewhat amazed by the differences in experiences with the Epson printers. I have owned a R1900 for several years and have had none of the problems mentioned here. It never jams, never gets plugged even when I haven't used it for a couple of months, just simply makes outstanding prints at 13 by 19, all the way to the margins no matter which paper I use. Ink costs $14 per cartridge.

Another question is; when were the printers last use and do you have the printer knowledge to get one up and running? If they have been idle for sometime, a extreme nozzle cleaning will likely be needed.

That could mean, knowing how to safely inject cleaning fluid into the printer head, via the ink ports where the cartridges connect.

Back in April, it took two weeks to get a good nozzle check on a r1800. The owner said, the printer had been idle for six months.

OEM ink was always used.

thanks I'll try that

Yes, I believe so. The 2200 was 7 inks. 1900 is 8 and both have been discontinued. Epson site says 1900 was replaced with R2000 (8 inks). Just google them both and you'll be able to put together a time line and find the R1900 is still available.

good info thanks , do you know if the 1900 is the newer of the two?

I bought an R1900 over 5 yrs ago to replace an R800 that ended up with head problems. I also wanted something larger than 8 1/2 x 11. I don't do a lot of printing lately, so for the last year or so, I run a head check every week and have had to do a clean just once. If I have a large job, I farm it out to WHCC. I don't think I will ever have to reset or replace the ink pad. Also only use Epson inks. I will buy Epson again if this one bites the dust. No experience with the 2200.

Thanks Sheila I can get a system for cheaper ink but I would use just for large format, I know its an older model but price is more inviting , both printers I am looking at had very little use so just want to make sure I got the better model , the 1900 is the newer one of the two , is it not?

Been using Epson printers for years.Still do.
The 2200 was the worst I ever owned. I never got it to print colors properly.
I bought it refurbished from Epson years ago.
I recently gave it away after cleaning the dust off it.
