The R1900 is an older printer. I have owned this printer for a few years and I believe it has been replaced by newer models. The prints are very good in my opinion but this printer drinks ink so I get most of my prints especially 4X6s somewhere else.

Thanks Sheila I can get a system for cheaper ink but I would use just for large format, I know its an older model but price is more inviting , both printers I am looking at had very little use so just want to make sure I got the better model , the 1900 is the newer one of the two , is it not?

I am not familiar with the other model. I originally bought the 1900 when I was using Windows. I switched to a MAC almost 3 years ago and I think I had the printer for at least one more year. Did you check the Epson web site. I am not where the 1900 is located right now so I can't give you exact details.

I own and use the Epson 3880, a fine printer. With it, I can do prints with pro-level quality.

Make sure you color calibrate your computer monitor. Then you will get prints with colors that match the image in the display on the monitor.

If prints come out too dark, then lower the monitor brightness. If prints come out too bright, then increase the monitor brightness.

These suggestions may seem counterintuitive (because they are), but consider that if you brighten the monitor, then you will naturally by eye lower the image brightness to adjust for printing.

Use the printer profiles that photography paper manufactures provide. You can download these profiles from the Web-site for the manufacturer. These profiles ensure the computer and the printer properly work together when for printing on that paper.

Good luck.

I took a portrait photography course at a college here some time ago and they had the large model Epson printers that they used. The instructor said that they frequently jammed and the jets had to be cleaned frequently. They began using some Canon printers and haven't had any problems. Just sayin'! I've been using Canons and haven't had any problems.

I'm not familiar with either of those Epson printers. Years ago, I had an Epson wide-body color printer which got very little use. After sitting unused and turned off for a significant period, one or more nozzles would be clogged. When going through a cleaning process, the machine tried to clear all at the same time, not distinguishing between clogged and not clogged. On one occasion, it took so many cycles to clean the nozzles that I had to replace all eight tanks before I could print. I gave that Epson printer away and bought a Canon Pro9000 Mark II and have had no clogging problems in many years of intermittent use.

Don't know if this will be of help to you, because I'm not familiar with the R1900. I have, however, used the 2200 for many years and continue to use it exclusively for all of my home printing. The biggest drawback that I've found is that the ink cartridges clog when not in use requiring frequent clearing. That process, of course, uses ink, so I'm sure that it's not the most economical printer out there. Having said that the quality of my prints is quite good. The only issue I have in that area is an inability to print browns that match the shade of brown on my monitor.
I bought this machine shortly after it was introduced, so in terms of dependability, it's been a real workhorse.

I used the Epson R1900 for several years, and it printed the best pictures of any printer I have used. When I went to replace it, the R1900 did not seem to be available, so I purchased the R2000. The prints are not as good as the R1900, and the roller system requires cleaning more often. Sorry, I have not used the R2200.

The 2200 is newer than the 1900.

I used an Epson 1400 up until it recently croaked, went out and got an R2000 (on sale now for around $450). The prints are clearly better than the 1400, which I was satisfied with at the time. I haven't bought Canon since I got my first one 20 years ago. The print head failed after three weeks and the Canon rep refused to honor their warranty, claiming that the print head was not covered even though the printed warranty did not exclude it. Haven't bought Canon products since.

Thanks for the story of your unhappy experience with the "Canon rep."

Let me please note that in such cases, going up the ladder to a higher ranking employee, one with the authority to make a decision, will result in customer satisfaction.

You have to ask for someone who has the authority to make a decision. Otherwise you will find yourself dealing fruitlessly with employees trained to deflect customer complaints.

Take notes of your telephone call. Ask for names and employee numbers. Write down the time and date and telephone number you called. Ask for the name of the individual the customer rep reports to. Inform the customer rep you are taking notes.

Stay business-like. Push firmly until you get results.

Nowadays you can also do a chat online with a customer rep. Everything gets documented that way. You can also send an e-mail to the company.

After all, a warranty typically covers just about everything functional in an electromechanical device like a printer of photographs.

A reasonable person in the company will understand so, and make things right for the customer.

Good luck next time.

I am somewhat amazed by the differences in experiences with the Epson printers. I have owned a R1900 for several years and have had none of the problems mentioned here. It never jams, never gets plugged even when I haven't used it for a couple of months, just simply makes outstanding prints at 13 by 19, all the way to the margins no matter which paper I use. Ink costs $14 per cartridge.
