Canon, Nikon, Nikon, Canon, Going out of my mind between these two cameras. Some one please keep me out of the looney bin.

I looked at all the ones you're looking at and decided, gratefully, on the SX50...

Originally went with the Nikon being a long time Nikon fan.
But Nikon falls way short in this category... no RAW etc.

See attached.. the reason I got the SX50!

I'm inexperienced when it comes to using raw images. I can open them in the program that came with my SX 50 Canon, which is called 'Digital Photo Professional', and will (hopefully) learn what all the terminology means for editing them, but my question is actually, how can I open the raw CR2 images in Photoshop Elements 10? It says it doesn't recognize that type file, but when I inquire (Googling), about it, others say they can open raw in Elements 10. Confused. If you can explain (in baby steps), if there is a way to do so, I would very much appreciate it. What I have read about it seems to talk about the 'Editor' in Elements. I don't know about any such option. What am I missing?

I use DPP to convert to raw, then process in PSE 11. I also use Photomatix after the RAW conversion. Hope this helps.

It's just a matter of time that "bridge" cameras will make today's DSLRs obsolete. I realize that flies in the face of the hard core DSLR shooters, but it's already happening.

In this day and age with Photoshop, Nix filters etc. you can make stunning adjustments to rival any DSLR.

I absolutely agree with you. Those who belittle the capabilities of bridge cameras either don't own one or have a negative preconception to begin with. If you can't take consistently awesome photos with a bridge, then you're not really trying.

This attached pic is w/ Canon SX50...

No doubt there are situations where a dSLR is better suited - for example, if you need an array of multiple focusing points, want to use filters, require a lens with very wide aperture value, etc. But in most situations, a decent bridge camera will do just fine and yield good results. I think "occasionally limited" is a more accurate description than "very limited".

Thanks! One thing, at full zoom you really need a tripod and keep it steady. Getting focus is not real fast... but once you get it -- YOU GOT IT!

I obsessed over and over on what kind of camera to buy.
DSLR w/ 2 lenses, 2 DSLRs w/ 1 lens each, or...
an up and coming bridge camera... Canon SX 50 w/ 1200mm equivelent. Since I am a "hobbyest", I do just fine...

So there we are, snowmobiling through beautiful Yellowstone Park on a cold but sunny winter morning. The guide signals a stop because he spotted some trumpeter swans on a misty stream.

I unstrap the dry sack from the snowmobile, my cold hands fumbling to unroll it, frozen over with snow. I pull my camera backpack out, unzipping 3 compartments so i can switch from the wide angle to the telephoto plus a teleconverter. I drop to my knees, using the snowmobile seat as a rest and fire off several shots of the distant swans.

During this time, two of the swans have grown bored with my fumbling and have fallen asleep with their heads resting on their backs.

Meanwhile, my wife gets off her snowmobile, reaches inside her coat for the point and shoot camera tucked in the inside pocket. She takes one picture (heaven forbid we bracket or waste another push of the shutter button.)

Bottom line, there's times when that Coolpix S8100 a big advantage.

In this day and age of Lightroom and Nik plug-ins, etc., the higher end P&S cameras are coming of age, especially if the P&S shoots RAW...

Beautiful pics! My point is in this day and age of Lightroom, NIX Sharpen, etc., why would anyone want to lug heavy lenses anymore?
I know I'll get criticised by the Old School crowd...
But isn't it possible that DSLRs could go the way of the brick phone? Just sayin'...

FYI I just got the Canon SX50 HS... and love it....

Of course there is a lot of advantages to DSLR's over Bridge. But if DSLR's make it too difficult for people who are aging or other's for other reasons, it is a great option.
No choice is perfect.
I am just glad that I don't have to be left out of a hobby that I really enjoy. My thanks to Canon and the other makers of the Bridge cameras who opened this option up to us! I know that if I need to replace my SX40, I will be looking for it's successors!

In this day and age of Lightroom, Nik plug ins, etc., I wonder why not a bridge camera with a zoom. I mean, all this technology.... will DSLRs go the way of a brick phone?
I know I'm stepping on a lot of "old school" feet... but I do wonder...

Ya and the Sony 20.4 Megapixels V Canon 12 mp

and $100 less camera.

I' would buy the Sony any day of the week.

I will save the $100, get more features, and the 12mp is PLENTY for any prints that I will ever make! Only thing going for the Sony is the increased megapixels at the expense of some very important features!

Knock your self out, I'll go for the IQ

I have learned in my search for a "bridge" camera, that often, high MP = noise. I just got the Canon and am, so far, delighted! My pics will go on websites, and maybe small prints. Anything over 10-12mp is lost and, again, can create too much noise. IMHO
