I got to be friends with the Amish that moved into the southern tier of NY. They consider themselves, New World Amish which means they can have one tractor, use equipment with rubber wheels, use motorized equipment. They are diary farmers and sell organic. the horses still do the work, mowing, baling and the like. The tractor can be used for heavy loads. they are all great folks. those in our area are devote bird watchers.

I went to check on the Pileated chicks in the pole around the corner and found them fledged and gone into their new world. However at the top of the same pole is an American Kestrel's nest. It looks like one chick as I see it so far. Here are some photos of the baby who is close to fledging.

I did the exact same thing. I had all this Canon equipment and sold all of it thinking the Coolpix P1000 was the way to go. at first it seemed ok far reaching, the moon , bird mode and others. but when I took a look at the photos I was amazed at the lack of quality. they all seemed to be soft. well most of them even on a tripod and or other support. I was really disappointed. the camera overall has many features, shoot RAW, scenes and more but most of the photos are soft. Sometimes if I don't need a lot of zoom I may get a fairly good photo. but over all to answer your question you will be only half happy. I still have it and used it sparingly as I went to a LUMIX G9 with a Leica 100-400 lens.

I had Canon cameras from the film to the 7D MKII with all canon lens. as I got older, I did not think I wanted all that weight to carry (500mm) around so I sold everything and went to a Nikon P1000, however I did not like the IQ from the camera. so, I went to the Lumix G9 with the Leica 100-400 lens. this is now what I use for all my wildlife photography. the camera out shines the 7D MKII by a miles, it has faster shutter speeds, you can set Shutter in Program mode, it has a built in tele-extender, a zoom feature Jpg only, it has Pre-burst which allows for catching shot not heard of with a 7D. I had a canon mount Sigma lens left from everything; I got an adapter, but it only works in manual. I wish I could tell you everything about the camera, but I do not want to write a book. You can see some of my photos here: https://www.uglyhedgehog.com/user-topic-list?usernum=26072 Here is a helpful document for the camera: https://www.wimarys.com/panasonic-lumix-g9-settings-tips-tricks/

I also looked at Olympus but found the Lumix was the better buy

Here is how I understand it, there are black and white on the extreme ends of the color spectrum. Camera are designed to shot an 18% gray. so if you shoot snow at the non compensated setting it will look gray. same with black it will look gray. so you need to compensate for the white snow from 1.5 to 2 stop so it will look white. now on the dark side it the same, except you compensate the over way. the hardest thing to photography is a black bear or a black dog that is wet in low light, compensation tells the meter I want the correct color
……-2.....-1.....0....+1.....+2 this is on most cameras and that how it is adjusted.

In 1976 while in the Navy on the USS Enterprise, we paid a visit to Hobart. It was one of greatest liberty a sailor could have. We took the train to Launceston and stayed a few days until duty called. I went some wonderful people the country is beautiful, no wonder why you want to go back. I went fishing with a local for Launceston and we visited a man who was a hunter and had a head on every game animal on the wall. Duty called and I had to get back so I got a ride back with some folks, I gave a tour of the ship and was rewarded with the mans military hat pin and arm badge from his uniform. He was so grateful for the American's in WW II

We have some very high electric poles which have been around for years, probably around 60-75'. the Pileated woodpeckers have made a hole and are nesting in the hole, however higher up on the pole are a pair of nesting Kestrels. I was able to capture both. It take the pileated a long time between meals so I watched the kestrels until she came back
