Give Paint.net a try it is a very good program. It is free and will do all you will need, to work on and manipulate your photos.
I do some woodworking, and make pen's on a small wood lathe.
Just take pictures. Post um where they can be seen. If they are good you are certified as a photographer. If they arent you arent.

I have the SMC Takumar 1:1.4/50 made by Asahi. It is a super lens. You just about don't need light with it. It takes about $450.00 to get an equivlant lens. You can expect to pay upwards from $100.00 for a used one, if you can find one! Best lens I have! I also shoot in live mode with that lens.
