Not free but PS Elements at $70 does a great job.

I totally agree. Lightroom is much more powerful, but has a steep learning curve. The Organizer in Photoshop Elements 2022 is much easier to learn, and yet powerful enough to effectively manage large numbers of photos and videos. My Catalog contains about 60K items.

I've been saying for several years that purchasing PSE when it is reduced in price, once in awhile, is an economical move. If one buys PSE at $70 every four years that is $210 for a 12 year period. The lowest level of PS CC at $10 per month over that same 12 years is $1,440. I know many will say you get the upgrades as they come out, the additional procedures are readily available. Is that really worth $1,230?

Remember you are also getting Lightroom Classic and Lightroom for the $9.99/mo. FWIW

Adobe sent me an add for 30 percent off PSE. I usually wait for a sale and get both PSE and Premiere Elements together for 99 bucks because I do a bunch of video too. This is Photo Shop Elements (only) for $69.99. -- which last time I checked the 30 dollar savings could buy one or or maybe two coffees at Starbucks.
This is the 2021 edition which has a couple of updates and new stuff more than my 2020 edition.
I usually wait a few years until Adobe does something -- updates -- new items -- worth paying 100 dollars for.
Most years Adobe has both PSE and PE together at the end of the year for 99 bucks. Disclaimer -- I am not associated and/or paid by Adobe in any way. Just FYI

This may prove helpful for those wondering if upgrading to PSE 2021.

Hello Hoggers:
The ability to use keywords is important to me. Any advice and suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Have you ever considered using the Organizer in Photoshop Elements 2021? The Organizer can essentially do everything that the Library module that Lightroom Classic. But the learning curve is not nearly as steep, and the user interface is much more friendly.

I have used PSE's Organizer since it's beginning 20 years ago. Today it remains my DAM program for about 60K photos, videos, and audio files.

Somewhat OT but it may be useful to you. If you are upgrading from Photoshop Elements, and you were using its Organizer to manage your images, you can easily convert your PSE Catalog to Lightroom CC with the appropriate Lightroom command. Click on File > Import from Photoshop Elements Catalog. All of your Elements keywords and albums etc are converted to Lightroom.

I did this with my 50K collection of photos and videos and it worked swell.

Photoshop Elements 2021. It has three levels of use. Quick, Guided, and Expert. Very easy to initially use, and as your skills progress it can be a very powerful editor.

Additionally, the program includes an Organizer with similar capabilities Lightroom CC but with a much simpler interface. You may want to check my blog/website for many articles on it and other digital photography topics.

A few years ago, my Tamron 18-270mm lens fell off the camera onto concrete. No glass was broken, but it sustained some major damage. I sent it to Tamron (NY I think) from the west coast and they returned it as good as new within a week. FWIW

Additionally, a Colorize command was added to PSE 2020 - the version that preceded PSE 2021. Not sure how good it does relative to others. I am pretty sure it uses Adobe's Sensei (AI).

So I purchased this scanner recently to scan my slides which have been in a big box on the storage shelf that my wife has threatened to throw in the dumpster. After acquainting myself with the scanner, I have learned that to scan 4 slides at 1200 DPI takes approximately 15 minutes to complete. At age 72, I am not sure I have enough time left to scan 1000 slides (lol). Am I doing something wrong or should I chalk this up to not doing enough homework prior to purchase. A scanning service that does this may have been the better alternative.

It sounds like your plan is to have your scanned slides become your new archival master, so you can discard your slides. That may not be your intent, and it probably shouldn't be. That be as it may, scanning at only 1200 dpi is probably too low if you are considering printing some of them. Keeping the math simple and saying a 35 mm slide is one inch square, 1200 dpi will only allow a print of 4"x4" if you sent a file of 300 (ppi) dpi to the printer. I would scan at 3200 dpi.

As others have pointed out, the time/slide increases, but you don't have to sit and watch it. :-)

Actually, 1000 slides are not that many looking at it that way.

If you are a Lightroom Classic user, you may want to explore using Lightroom. This version of the family can share selected pictures among all of your devices. There is a desktop, android, and iOS version.

Thank you - I get the sense that most folks don't read what was written before - of instance, the person who points out that a LR backup is complete did not point out that this is only a backup of the catalog, not of the image files.

Way too much ignorance and naivté out there, and the concepts are not easy to digest in the first place - so half-answers are worse than no answer at all IMHO.

Agreed.

If you have trouble reaching Adobe, within the Organizer click on Edit > Preferences and turn off automatic Facial Recognition. It can use a lot of PC resources as it does its initial scan of your Catalog.
