To put it simply,.......the "Rule of Thumb",.....thru the viewfinder of the camera.

I use split foam pipe tubing secured with duct tape,,....readily sold cheaply at any hardware store,.....but then there are also nice form fitted quilted ones with soft cu$hy padding for the more discriminating buyers.
It's going to take a beating during usage anyway,....shop accordingly.

In a sense, we photographers are sometimes unknowingly historians capturing the last fleeting images of subjects now or soon to be lost to obscurity.

An interesting documentary well worth the watch,....IMHO,.....follows the lesser known origins and history of a down south music recording studio "Fame" located at a place with humble beginnings that soon became a sought out recording destination by a vast variety of recording artists who's names you will recognize.
Fame recording studios in Muscle Shoals, Alabama a destination with a now rich history of music making magic ,...from Wilson Pickett, Aretha Franklin thru The Rolling Stones and many others.
This documentaries ending 10 minutes culminates with a stunning performance by Alicia Keys impressive studio recording performance of "Pressing On",.....by itself more than worth the watch!!!!,....melding into "Sweet Home Alabama" by American rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd.
I still continue to watch this well done documentary for it's great presentation.

I hope some reading this might give it a watch and enjoy the same experience I have.
Thanks in advance for checking it out.

Filling the frame,...too me,...means,...always cropping all subjects in the viewfinder,....to the desired look in my mind's eye,....to achieve the expected result in the completed image.

As an aside,...on occasion I do not hesitate go from full frame to one of the APS-c crop factors,...from experience my final images in doing so have not been detrimental to my liking and outcome.
I even do this on occasion when using my long lens to further explore closer desired cropping.

Sound basics practices applied,...(tripod, critical focus, cable release, mirror up, low ISO's) and such always,...trump,...poor technique in any work with the camera.
Garbage in,..........garbage out!!!!

I really enjoyed reading your post... A lot to reflect on. I hope you don't mind if I copied and saved it ?

Not at all Bob,....,thanks muchly,.....I'm hesitant posting my thoughts here sometimes not wanting to sound opposed or offended about others.
If anything I admire those who have adopted the mirrorless workflow, there's much to be cognizant of once committed,.....where I've been basically doing everything the same over the years,.....focus, f stops, ASA's rather than ISO's, (haven't ever used auto focus even though my camera's and a couple of lenses have it onboard,......wouldn't know where to start,....heck I don't even have a smart phone or know how to use one,...have never used an ATM or a pin # for anything,...remembering passwords challenge me sufficiently,...lol.
I do though like tech things like designing and building my own computers,..shooting RAW files and post processing images to my particular liking and such.
I just turned 80,...and can't believe I'm even saying it,...must have been a typo on my birth certificate,.....ohh,...ohhh,.......that was written in cursive back then,...so must have been illegible hand writting or something??
Nice meeting you here Bob,...be well my friend.

I do the same thing,....my preference though,..lies in going the opposite direction,......I'm a dinosaur of sorts, using vintage lenses and manual focus in all my work,...not to prove any particular point,....rather preferring to sustaining the enjoyment of manual workflow I first fell in love with in the early 1960's when afflicted with the photography bug.
My experience and images to my seeing achieve an equal outcome to mirrorless counterparts I observe by fellow photographer's work in my humble opinion.
Technically and mathematically I understand the opposite to be factually more than true,....I do not challenge that fact,...but to my seeing my final files and large prints adequately match mirror free camera images,........with these tired old eyes anyway,.... could such images side by side,.....I sometimes wonder,...could only your dog see the the implied difference?,.............lol.
Had my subject of interest over the years been other than landscape, scenic and nature,...say birding or varied moving subect matter, (although at one time I was extensively active in auto circuit racing,....yet managed it well) I might have then gravitated toward the quicker responsiveness of an auto focusing and mirrorless system.
Anyway,.....we all do the same thing,.....different.

I would suggest learning to....visualizing the final image you envision in your mind's eye,....crop and create that thru the viewfinder while applying the required settings to achieve that personal outcome you first envisioned,....over time that knowledge will become cumulative to draw upon for future work.
The beauty of digital allows you to let the camera teach you with immediate visual results ,....pixels cost nothing so go at it .

This solution works for my similar problems,....

Go to Control Panel > Printers > and delete the printer from your computer in that window......then restart your computer leaving the printer connected,.....and the computer will now recognize the printer as a NEW device,...and automatically search and install the latest drivers via online connection,...and it will then work properly.

Wonderful images (especially #1); and I love Lubec!

Thanks muchly srt101fan,....thanks so much for your kind words.

I retired and we relocated to Lubec shortly after 9/11.
My wife and I had run photo workshops up here and decided to relocate from the greater Boston rat race,.....we enjoy the slower pace of living in down east Maine,...there are trade offs but none that we regret....has been a fair influx of property sales and renovation to existing real estate since COVID in Lubec.
We are blessed to be surrounded by such natural beauty in this off the beaten path location.

Nice meeting you here,...wishing you and yours a Happy New Year.
