Can't Take a Compliment

It's funny how some people can't take a compliment. In one of my groups, there is a woman in her 70s who is very attractive, despite not wearing makeup or doing anything with her hair. Being the thoughtful gentleman that I am, I thought I would pay her a compliment.

"You know, Pam, despite the fact that you're probably pushing 80, you're still a rather attractive woman. Although you seem to be letting yourself go, never wearing any makeup and not doing anything with your hair, just letting it run wild, you're still rather nice to look at."

I expected a big smile, but she made an ugly face and stormed away. Some people just can't take a compliment.

Just think, Jerry - you lucked out. She could’ve made *your* face ugly!

Perhaps she didn't understand fully what you said. Perhaps she only heard "pushing 80" "leting yourself go and never wearing any make up". So she didn't take it as a compliment.

Definitely. "Better to keep mouth closed and appear dumb than to open it and remove all doubt."

Yeah, some people hear only what they want to hear.

Gee Jerry, you really need to give this lovely lady an industrial
size bottle of cologne named WD-40

I hope you all realize that I just made up that story. I hesitate to give women compliments because they can take them the wrong way.

"Your hair looks very nice."

"Are you suggesting that it looked awful before?"

Actually, there is a 70-year-old woman in a couple of my groups, and she looks great despite no makeup and no hair care. I wouldn't dare mention that to her, though.

Then there are some who don't have a clue about giving a compliment. Lol.
(I know you are being sarcastic)

We all take compliments the wrong way. Did you lose weight? You mean, I was fat before! Your photograph is really good! Was there something wrong with my camera before? I really love how your tattoo hides your stretch marks!

I learned early at work compliments can be a source of trouble. You can compliment a coworker and the next day you’re in Labor Relations trying to convince everyone you are n sexually harassing her or him!

It is too much harder these days to be nice. Hold a door open for a woman and wonder why they didn’t say thank you. They were probably thinking you were trying to start a conversation!

I GIVE UP!

Right! That person who lost a lot of weight might have a horrible disease. I've seen that a few times on YouTube. A YouTuber will say that people have been congratulating him on his weight loss - which was caused by cancer.

As for holding a door open - "I don't need your phony chivalry. I'm perfectly capable of opening a door."
