I have a Manfotto 055 carbon fiber tripod with a wide (28mm+)top leg. The cheap foam no-freeze pipe wraps are too thick to use, the usual commercial neoprene leg covers are very expensive for small pieces of neoprene with edge hook&loop. Has anyone figured out any less costly alternative? Thanks.

? Curious - What's the purpose of the leg covers?

They get cold in the winter.

Check out pipe insulation found in the plumbing section of Lowes or Home Depot.

Not sure, but I believe he already did:

I used the pipe insulation on my aluminum tripods for years with no problem.
I have really found no need on my Carbon fiber tripods.

What about pool noodles? You could try putting a slit in them and wrapping them around the legs.

I have pool noodle and it is also (like foam pipe wrap) too thick. The wrap is really to protect the leg since carbon fiber does not dent like aluminum(dents but usable) but can crack and then shatter with impacts ( walls, counters, etc.) I was on a workshop and another participant cracked his high quality gitzo carbon fiber tripod leg when it accidentally impacted a wooden table corner in the hotel lobby. Neoprene is relatively inewxpensive, but neoprene tripod leg covers are very costly.

Amazon has adhesive backed foam sheets in various sizes. They’re 1/8” thick.

Interesting. In over 45 years of shooting, I've never "dented" a tripod leg.
Maybe I'm careful with them.

I'm not overly careful, I just don't sling it about.
