Dick, this was the best I could do, reference the banding in the sky. The banding was from having to torture a jpg image. If this were a RAW original, I could have brought out a lot more natural looking detail in the overall image.

In the attached photograph I'm trying to capture the skyline and use a slow shutter to create the lights in the road effect, but in order not to blow out the extremely bright lights on the building near the center and to get good focus throughout the image I used f/11. The EXIF data is f/11, ISO 100, 29 seconds, Nikon 24-70mm lens @ 24mm. No filters. I've seen a lot of your pictures where you manage to capture the shadows and still not blow out the bright lights. I managed to get a pretty good correction in PP, but I should be able to get a much better image straight from my Nikon D850. Your help and advice would be most appreciated. Thank you all in advance.

Yup. Rapists and child molesters just don't seem to win popularity contests in prison. This certainly removes the possibility of a repeat offense.

That is a shame, however in prison child abusers don't seem to fair well, even felons have some sense of decency.

Keep the originals in an archival file, box, etc. Those can never be replaced.

What do most people do with old photos that they scanned? Archive them in a box or throw them out?
I have many that are over 50 years old that I will be scanning. Scans are backed up in three places and in the cloud.
My primary reason for scanning them is to have a digital copy and also make them available to family.
It appears that they all will fit in one copier paper box.

Thoughts and opinions?

This photo of the full moon was taken with SONY DSC-HX80 camera. I think the I used the Manual mode and zoomed in on it. Was wondered what caused the "red dots" in the photo. I was in the country so no light pollution.

I'd suggest looking into Silverfast software. I've been using it since my scanner software failed to be compatible with Windows 7.

Helping friend scan slides from the 1950s. My share is about 1000 slides. I have a Nikon Super CoolScan 5000 ed scanner with a feed attachment which is no longer supported by Nikon. Options seem to be setup an extra computer with Windows 97 (or earlier) or use VueScan software. Question pros/cons of each method and experiences with those options.
Thanks.

So I decided to go exploring in my current city of residence - took an hour and half bus ride to get to the other side of Shenyang (SY is BIG folks!). Wound up beginning my walk at a an old Buddhist monastery called Falun Temple (also known as North Tower Temple) which was built around an old Qing Dynasty tower called Falun Tower (or North Tower). It's one of four towers built back then and has something to do with appeasing the gods of the four winds or some such. Was a very cool, quiet and reflecting visit. I only got a few shots from inside as I was told to be extremely respectful of the many prayer buildings and room housing all kinds of Buddha statues.

Finished up there and the girlfriend decided she wanted to visit a local street market. Spent the rest of the afternoon strolling through that - eating street food, letting her shop, and taking a bunch of snaps. And inevitably saying 'Hello' back to local folks who have never seen a westerner before (much less an American) and wanting to use the one English word they know... "hello!". Except the kids - the kids take English mandatory from 8th grade through the end of university -- when they could overcome the usual shyness they really wanted to practice English. It's that way in every city I've been to in China. :)

This isn't all that difficult a "problem" to solve. Getting the exposure you need to facilitate the processing of the image is what's important. In order to do that, one would need to spot meter the brightest portion of the scene. Then, increase the exposure a few stops. The amount is determined by the Zone in which you want to place that value and the capabilities of the camera. Those capabilities would be determined through structured testing.

This exposure increase will also brighten the shadows by an equal number of stops. In processing, particularly starting with a RAW file, which for this is a necessity, initial adjustment in ACR will provide a satisfactory start to achieve the appearance one desires in the final "print".

All of my images, film and digital, have exif data. I strip that data prior to posting in order to avoid misleading those certain folks who feel it's necessary to view that information.

Metadata tags are not compressed, but some programs do remove meta-data (e.g. F-stop, GPS data, copyright info). Sometimes this is desired for privacy reasons (e.g. removing GPS data) and other times, this becomes a problem. Almost all images have meta-data fields.

Observing the file size change will not necessarily indicate a change to the image.

The claim is that EXIFTOOL does not change the image. If you make a careful observation of the file size before and after you should be able to get a credible answer. Other programs may not have the same safety built in. I found that even EXIFTOOL could not change the metadata in my raw files but some programs store changes to the file in a "side car" file so that is worth consideration.
