Helping friend scan slides from the 1950s. My share is about 1000 slides. I have a Nikon Super CoolScan 5000 ed scanner with a feed attachment which is no longer supported by Nikon. Options seem to be setup an extra computer with Windows 97 (or earlier) or use VueScan software. Question pros/cons of each method and experiences with those options.
Thanks.
Harold

I have a 4000 and Vuescan I find better than the original software. As long as your computer supports Firewire you should be fine with this.

The 5000ED is that old? I thought it would be compatible to Windows XP. To get a computer that run Windows 97/95 is near impossible because I tried. If an XP machine would work then I would set it up for XP. I have a hard drive with Win XP loaded for just that purpose.

Same experience here.
Much prefer VueScan to the Nikon software.

I continue to run my Dad's old XP unit {he died five years ago}, isolated from networking, solely to support my Nikon scanner.

I like the Nikon software and don't see any reason to procure other software.

If that system ever dies, I've been told by the computer professional who sold the scanner to me that running it from my Linux desktop is straight-forward.

Actually almost all Nikon software sucks. Vuescan is much better.

Actually there's a work-around for Windows 7. I have it on my 7 Pro machine, and it works fine. They actually did software for Vista. That was their last upgrade. I had a guru friend do it for me, and it took him about 10 minutes.

I have been using a Nikon Coolscan for several years with Windows 7 and the original Nikon Scan software. It requires a kludge that uses the Windows Vista driver, the last one Nikon supported.

Vuescan. You do NOT want to run unsupported operating systems in 2018!
