At least you guys have a birth place you want to visit.
I was born in Detroit, my folks left there when I was 18 months old and I went back once in 1970 when I flew in there to visit an Army buddy from Vietnam who lived in Hamtramck.
Hi, Robert! I grew up in Detroit, from about age 4 until I was commissioned 2Lt in USAF. I did not return to live there when I retired, but did visit relatives there for many years.

I'm curious. The number of views of this set is substantially fewer than for the other 2 sets of this church. Does that mean that people aren't much interested in the windows?

Potential answer: Sets 1 and 2 were featured in the Daily Digest, but Set 3 was not. That may be why fewer views, even though all 3 sets linked to the others. This suggests that linking doesn't do much.

Fortunately, our cat doesn't bother the tree. How old are you? 100? God bless you!
Only 83 (last week), but sometimes it feels older. I believe the ornament mentioned was on my family's tree in 1938.

My last visit to my birthplace was in 2007: https://www.flickr.com/photos/8712554@N02/sets/72157632950156073/. Your picture is very lovely.

In 2012 I did an auto trip to Colorado and Utah and did drive around some of the Gunnison Reservoir--I suppose it was formed by the dam your dad helped build? There are a few photos of that lake at the end of this Album: https://www.flickr.com/photos/8712554@N02/sets/72157631545442569/.

Thanks, John! I'm pleased you enjoyed them.

Don, most photographers don't have the access to the area above the ceiling--I was fortunate to have the opportunity and I felt obligated to share. Thanks for the nice comment.

I was going to guess rock candy. Arizona is my state of birth (Bartlett Dam, near Cave Creek), but I only lived there my first year (until the dam was finished--my dad was a concrete worker). I do have some nephews in Phoenix, though, so visit there occasionally.

A great display and really fine photo! How do you keep the lights from "blooming"? My pictures of my own lights all do that.

More responses.

Jim, thank you very much. I’m pleased to have stirred your memories.

Jay, thanks, too—I’m happy you enjoyed them. You’re welcome—I like to share.

lnl, thank you, and I agree. We are definitely enjoying our Klais instrument, which has 4 manuals and more than 4400 pipes. The Orgelbau Klais Bonn firm has been in business for more than 125 years, in Bonn, and built both organs in that cathedral. The Nave Organ (a “swallow’s nest” version) is not fastened to the wall, as most are, but is suspended from the ceiling by 4 very heavy steel cables. The cathedral walls are considered historic and no modifications (other than rebuilding) are permitted; the ceiling, however, was damaged in WWII and rebuilt, and is not considered historic. The Nave Organ hangs an inch or two from the wall and is accessed from the surrounding balcony.

Looks as if I’m behind on responses again.

AzPicLady, I had similar difficulties—the cathedral is hemmed in pretty well and most wideangle lenses just aren’t wide enough. I resorted to a panorama at the beginning of Part 2. I’m pleased you liked my pictures.

Thomas, you’re very welcome. It was damaged in WWII but was rebuilt. The walls are considered to be protected historic elements and when the Nave Organ was built it was not permitted for it to be fastened to the wall (in typical “swallow’s nest” manner), so it was hung from 4 steel cables from the ceiling (which had been replaced after the war and was not historic). It sits about an inch or two from the wall and is entered from a balcony around the Nave.

Earnest, nice to see you. Thanks for the nice comments.

Doug, thank you very much! I’m glad you enjoyed them.

David, you are a master. I have been there several times over the years attending Photokina. How did you get permission to get inside the ceiling.
Spectacular imàges.

Don, thanks for the nice comments. A small group from my church was visiting the Orgelbau Klais Bonn organ builders checking them out for a potential purchase (we did buy theirs), and the company was at that time (2001) doing a refurbishment of the Transept Organ in the cathedral, which was originally built by Klais (and so was the Nave Organ). The firm was storing some of the organ pipes above the ceiling while they were working on the organ, and the owner of the firm took our group up there as part of our visit. I will confess that it was pretty scary--that lift went up 200 feet and the narrow walkway between it and the opening in the roof was very open (it did have a rail). The view from up there was spectacular, though.
