I had this shot(s) planned for many months and had some high hopes and once I got there last February... I talked to some of the local photogs and was told it would be boring  as there was no foliage but still I carried on. I found "the" spot and got everything set up. What a gorgeous site, foliage or not. Set the cameras intervalometer and curled up in my blankie in a hollow in a tree.

Around 4 am I got up to check on the frost situation and discovered my camera had frozen  even with several layers of camera blankies. <sigh> Should have brought the hand warmer pouches. Anyway, here is the result from about 3.5 hours worth of shots sandwiched. Using a Canon 30D and 24-105 f4L. Approx 200 exposures from 1/4 to 60 seconds at f4 and PP in Lightroom and StarTrails. Not bad for a first attempt.

Slight PP

More in depth PP

May I recommend going to manual and choosing 1/250 sec minimum at f11 using ISO 100. This will freeze the flames and give a proper exposure for the flame. It also eliminates the wood and other non fire elements. If you need to adjust anything use the aperture. Slowing down the shutter speed causes motion blur on the fire. If anything speed up the shutter speed as fire is very very fast moving.

And thanks for steering me to the colored flame effects. I'm just itching to try it out.

I think you will find that you under exposed the entire scene by ½ stop or so and this will encourage bright colors to "pop" while drab colors darken down slightly. The shallow DOF also contributes to the muted colors in the background. Look closely and you will see the colors, just muted. The flower shows as almost spot on for exposure which puts the background on the under exposed side.

On a side note. I teach a photography class and most of the students are on the experienced side of life. Almost all have opted for LR after seeing how quickly general edits can be not to mention the organizational aspect. I have both CS4-6, Elements and Lightroom and after many years I use LR almost 95% of the time and only use PS for those intense edits. I never use Elements except to keep up to date for the odd student who is just starting out and listened to the salesman.
