In many ways I kind of sympathize with the questions and the stream of responses since size and weight also concern me. One model not mentioned in the Nikon line is the DF which is compact and not too heavy at 28 oz. What are the drawbacks you experience hoggers see with this model?

Why not get the samwe brand as your DSLR :?:

Likely I will since the Nikon P7800 is a leading contender in my mind and I would expect the menu to be similar and the batteries are the same.

Many of you were very helpful in offering your ideas about what compact / bridge camera with an OVF I could consider to add to my DSLR kit for traveling light. I promised to post a summary of my findings so far and that is what I am attempting to upload to the site. Hope it works. Thanks for all your help.

Can anybody help me _ I have 40 years worth of family pictures to scan in and have NO experience with scanners. Your help would be greatly appreciated

I faced the same issue and fellow "hoggers" pointed me to an Epson V600 which has been doing well for my similar job.

thank you. I found the 7800 coming in from a different menu path. I promised to offer a summary of my findings in a brief excel file I am building. I don't want to foul up the UHH site. Is there any special procedure I should use to post a page from an Excel file or can I just cut and paste into a "quick reply"?

First thank you all for your helpful responses on my search for a compact camera with EVF or OVF. I am organizing some data on the ones recommended and will see if I can post my list when done. Surprise to me, as I was searching the Nikon site for data on the P7800 yesterday, I couldn't find it. Just disappeared. Wonder if it has been dropped from the line. It's much lighter than the P9000, but the on line chat person didn't mention it, just the P9000.... or maybe my miserable computer skills are just showing .... again!

I don't know your budget or how small is small enough. Bridge cameras are not small, so let's rule them out. Four pocket size compact cameras I recommend are the Sony RX100 III or IV, the Panasonic ZS40 or ZS50, the Sony HX90V, and the Nikon P7800. You can check them out on B&H's website.

The RX100 III and IV have a relatively large 1 inch sensor, but the lens only goes out to 70mm, and it costs around $800-900 last I looked. The ZS40/50 and HX90V have small sensors, but zoom lenses that reach out to around 700mm. I have a P7800 that I love. It's sensor is bigger than the ZS40/50 and HX90V, but smaller than the RX100. It has a very sharp 28-200 f/2-4 lens which has a useful range and is fast enough for low light shooting. It's a little big for most pants pockets. It does fit nicely in a jacket pocket or a belt case. All of these cameras have an EVF (electronic viewfinder). The P7800 has a hot shoe. I have a tiny Nikon SB-300 flash for it that I use for bounce flash.
I don't know your budget or how small is small eno... (show quote)

Mark, thank you for a comprehensive reply. I appreciate your effort.

My question to fellow hoggers is asking for recommendations for a small, light P&S or bridge camera for trips when I don't want to take my D5300 kit (6 lenses available). My principle requirement is for an eye level finder when the LCD is not usable, e.g., beach, snow, etc. I would appreciate some help. I have searched this site but have not found any threads addressing this specific need. Subjects would be family, kids, activities and mainly to have a camera at hand for the unexpected. Thanks for your help

It's a guide line for a stationary subject, which tends to be effective but as your here ron do your photo's get more blurry when you switch to dx mode on your Nikon?

Question to those with experience: If crop is just a section of the FF view, then the focal length behavior would just be the same but capture less area of the picture being taken? This means the hand held shutter speed constraints would not change? Yes or no?

Good Morning Hogger,
My wife and I are planning to to travel to a Caribbean Island in January.
What is a good lens to carry around. My main interest are landscape with people in the picture. I have a D3200 camera with 18-55, 55-300, 50 1.8 and a 35 1.8. Need advice on which to carry or should I purchase another lens.

My ten days in Hawaii, used my nikon 18-140 kit lens 99% of the time and was satisfied.

Yeah, they're not going out of their way to make the customer happy, but luggage makers will be able to produce and sell a new line of carry-on luggage. I've decided that I'm through flying. I'm letting my bonus miles expire.

Ditto !! My last flight to Hawaii was delayed mostly due to the morons who insist on carrying on luggage far in excess of the guidelines and the attendants crushing the over head bins (even in 1st class) to accommodate it. I paid for 1st class tickets to avoid dealing this, all to no avail. My miles are expiring. I'll drive or stay at home. Hate airline travel with a passion.

Nikon also uses a Gold Band around the barrel to show off their best...Red on Canon. Doesn't mean the others are bad, just not top shelf or so called Pro lenses.

I thought the "gold ring" was trademarked by Leupold for their scopes?

My wife are taking a Viking River Cruise for 20 days from Budapest to Amsterdam in the fall. Suggestions on equipment (lens, tripod, etc.) to bring. Besides a wide angle and a good 18 to 270 walk around lens, should I bring my Tameron 150 to 600mm or a 70 to 300mm telephoto?

remember, as the boat is cruising, there will be vibration on the deck so shooting long from the ship will be a challenge. On shore, we did not experience the need for a long lens. Leave the Tam at home.

Using that logic, then" more cars = more deaths " too! Then that same logic can be applied to knives, bats, motorcycles, etc.

It is still relevant - their whole point is that "more guns=more deaths". I don't think many people would argue that we have a higher murder rate than most other industrialized nations where there are few guns. Fortunately we live in a lawful society - we see what happens in societies with lots of guns when the government breaks down (or when Dick Cheney breaks your government).

Per capital gun ownership in Switzerland is higher than here and the murder rate is miniscule. The problem is NOT guns, but our broken social and family structure.
