My wife are taking a Viking River Cruise for 20 days from Budapest to Amsterdam in the fall. Suggestions on equipment (lens, tripod, etc.) to bring. Besides a wide angle and a good 18 to 270 walk around lens, should I bring my Tameron 150 to 600mm or a 70 to 300mm telephoto?

We have just done a tour in a coach of BudaPest Prague Vienna Saltzburg and Munich and used mostly my Tamron 18-270 for landscapes people shots etc and my Sigma 10-20 for inside Cathedrals. My advice is not to take any big heavy stuff. Its very warm there and heavily populated so a tripod can be a PI the A and may not be of use anyway.I did see a few people with tripods but not many.

I only used my long lens once, to take pictures of some horses fighting along the riverbank. The rest of the time it rested in the room. Couldn't get far enough away from anything to need it! Used mostly wide angle, short zoom and a bright prime. There is surely no need to carry that long lens around with you, pick the most versatile wide angle you have, and don't worry with the rest. The Viking folks are gonna keep you very busy every day, and you'll be in a tightly compacted group, and also in crowds of other tourists and locals, so your photography will have to adapt. I could find no use for a tripod. A bright lens will help in the dark interiors of cathedrals and museums (if cameras are allowed anyway, they aren't allowed everywhere).

By the end of our cruise there was only one guy still carrying his DSLR, and his wife wasn't speaking to him because he smashed her Delft china with it on the bus.

If you are bringing 18-270 lens you have nothing to do with a 70-300. But the Tamron 150-600 could be nice to bring on the trip. But your widest lens will probably be the one you use most of the time.

Did you feel you could have used a long lens on the ship to take pictures (castles and such) as you cruised the river?

I just finished a similar cruise, but with another company. I took my 15-85 for the towns, and used my 70-300 while cruising the river. Have a great time.

Was there this past April but on another line
U will love it
I took my Nikon with only the 18-200 and my Nikon strobe for indoor shots ( lots of churches, etc)
As each day went into the next the camera got heavier and heavier. I would suggest taking your 18-270 as mine fit the bill. Also do not forget to take your battery charger and extra card as u will need it
Have a great time

My wife and I have taken a Viking River cruise, and several Insight motor coach cruises. The only lens I took was my Tamron 18-270. I got many great shots and didn't have to worry about carrying and changing lenses. I consider these vacations first and photo shoots second. Enjoy!

Done a cruise on the Rhine a few years back and used a lumix bridge camera plus a point and shoot quite adequate .

Just went to Budapest and Vienna, (only one part on water). But long zoom not necessary but be sure you're ready for night shots. You can take a local 1 hour tour In Budapest where they light up all the buildings along the river. I shot from a boat, but had focus trouble.
Had great food in Budapest (reasonable prices and delicious). Vienna high priced and just ok. Have a wonderful trip!
