A technical question.
I know that the more pixels you squeeze into the same area, each pixel gets smaller and at some “smallness” or other, you start to get an increase in noise.

Obviously, a full frame camera has more pixels just due to the larger size.

I shoot a cannon 80D crop sensor.

Keeping this all in mind my question is.

When I shoot with the same focal length on crop vs full frame and then crop my final product, it seems logical I need to crop less close with the smaller sensor than the larger sensor to get the same ultimate size since the same, say 50mm lens, is effectively longer on the crop camera getting me closer to my subject. Because of this full frame envy and pixel envy aren’t all they seem to be?

Yeah, I have full frame envy but to be honest, I get pictures I like with my current camera but the above question has just always bugged me and figured a few in here can provide an answer. I still want a full frame but want to learn more tech details anyway. Also partially my effort to learn and understand pixel's better.

told him laptop or desk top his choice but i would go for the best gaming system he can afford if he really does go for the new sony. He thinks I'm nuts. I'm not, but he will learn. My desk top is running a slightly older I7 but with graphics card and 32 GB ram with an SSD and at times I still find myself tapping my fingers. And I'm not even sure PS cc can take advantage of all that. But darn, it doesn't hurt.

When he starts to whine over the cost of that gaming system, I have my salt ready for the wounds.

Family can be so my fun. Huh?

I personally think I like the entire mirror less thing but I shoot outdoor in dusty dirty places. The worst of them was safari in Kenya. But light rains...dirt....i won't even look until they develop a system to shield the sensor when changing lenses. When that time comes and I can sit in the garden on my arse in the dirt and change out a lens, then maybe.

While I'm at it, this is my Jade plant in bloom on the porch.

Part of the "fun" is just arguing with the BIL for the sheer joy in it. Part of it is because I am a bit of a computer nerd and when I say something like your older computer will strain under 61MP ( he has an older I3, 8 Mb ram, and a spinning HR not an SSD) so you may want to budget for a new computer system simultaneously, being told I have no idea what I am talking about. He will buy it if he wants, but laugh, and also argue, when told I don't know computers. But again, part is just fun knowing that on this particular topic, I know what I am talking about and that later he will say so. Other wise, good advice.

This is a case of GAS. He does want full frame and don't blame him there but is crowing about the 61 MP and that is going to teach him real quick that he will shoot in lower res. Hell we all have some GAS. i shoot a caon 80 D and want a 90D and they isn't a lot of difference. I shoot a lot of animals and flowers and like having that crop factor. Someday maybe I'll carry a Canon MARK 50 XYX and pretend to actually know what the heck to do with it but I do fine with what I have. I only have rare times I find i really needed a full frame and can't recall when

Thanks. I may get the LR cc. I already subscribe to just PS on line and the LR 4 is an old bootleg student copy. I shoot raw and jpeg combined. For something quick without any changes I use the jpg but if I want something nicer, I use the raw files. May give LR cc a try just, well, because?

i use Photoshop cc. I also have an older non cloud based LR 4.4 that I got years ago and have no idea how to use. I don't do anything exciting in PS and don't play in layers there much either but have gotten pretty good at that program. I don't even know how to up load a photo into LR and wonder if it is worth my effort to learn? What does LR do different that PS? Or better or simpler that would make me go buy th eLR for Dummies book?

Thanks

Laughing. I really don't have a need for that many pixels. Jealousy is one thing, but then practicality hits

Thanks all. And for information only. Arguing with the BIL is never fun. Winning is irreplaceable.

i am having an argument with my brother in law - never a good thing but

He is looking at the new Sony a7R4 due to it's large file size ( 61 mega pixels I think). He also has an older smaller computer and an old slower hard drive and rarely prints anything as well as hardly ever does any extreme cropping. I have tried to tell him, however good the camera is, he is going to quickly find he needs a new computer system. Beyond that, in raw, i expect he will fill an SD card pretty rapidly.

In my opinion, shooting in RAW will give him nothing but headaches loading the files into his computer and manipulating them. Besides the obvious, that he can afford it, am I right?

Just wondering as, well, hell, i may be jealous as I shoot a crop Canon 8D which I actually do love.
