i am having an argument with my brother in law - never a good thing but

He is looking at the new Sony a7R4 due to it's large file size ( 61 mega pixels I think). He also has an older smaller computer and an old slower hard drive and rarely prints anything as well as hardly ever does any extreme cropping. I have tried to tell him, however good the camera is, he is going to quickly find he needs a new computer system. Beyond that, in raw, i expect he will fill an SD card pretty rapidly.

In my opinion, shooting in RAW will give him nothing but headaches loading the files into his computer and manipulating them. Besides the obvious, that he can afford it, am I right?

Just wondering as, well, hell, i may be jealous as I shoot a crop Canon 8D which I actually do love.

You're right. Tell the BIL the internet agrees with you. Enjoy the holidays.

Suggest he rent a copy of the Sony and shoot in RAW and process the files, a minimum of 100, say over a long weekend. Then, he will know the same from his own experience and not blame you, and us by extension.

If Adobe depended on everyone having a mainframe to run Lightroom raw processing, they would not be such a giant company.

UHH is friendly. Someone with an a7R4 can "dropbox' you some RAWs that you can give your brother-in-law to try.

For what its worth, arguing with in-laws of any sort, is not normally a smart thing to do.

Computers advance just as quickly as cameras do. I have a 7 year old Lenovo computer with a HDD. I could upgrade the RAM and put in a SSD. But, it also has an outdated, slow, Intel i3 CPU. Using that computer for a 61 megapixels Sony mirrorless camera, with RAW files, would be extremely slow. Which is why my next gift to myself, next Spring, will be a new computer with sufficient RAM, faster processor, and SSD storage. As mentioned earlier, the Sony a7r4 can be rented first. To experience the extremely slow process.

Which one? That's harder than camera choices.

He would be much better off with an A7iii and a new computer for the same money as the A7Riii.

That looks like a real nice camera. If the computer can't handle it they are cheaper than the camera or a good lens, just another photo accessory.

I don't know which PC yet. Spring is 3 months away. It could be a Dell, Lenovo, Asus, HP, Acer, etc. It will have at least a newer generation i5 or i7 CPU. And SSD storage.

Thanks all. And for information only. Arguing with the BIL is never fun. Winning is irreplaceable.

If your in law is looking to have the most pixels then tell him to wait until next year when Canon releases their 75 megapixel camera. Bottom line, if he wants something and can afford it, then it's his choice and decision to buy it. Everything you mentioned about handling large files he will find out for himself. I went through a similar situation a few years back when Canon introduced the 50 megapixel 5DSr. Great camera, just not a practical every day shooter.
Besides, if he can afford the camera, he can afford the new computer he'll need to quickly process the files on.
As for you being jealous, you would know better than anyone else! Maybe just a little...!?

You have answered the jealousy question...

Laughing. I really don't have a need for that many pixels. Jealousy is one thing, but then practicality hits

He can shoot at smaller file (not image) size until he upgrades the computer.
