Joe, dogs have owners. Cats have staff. I know. My house is kept solely for the comfort and benefit of the cat.

I agree with you, John. level horizons are easy to produce. My biggest gripe is shutter clickers who are wanna-be photographers but avoid processing. As opined by a very famous photographer, "One doesn't take a photograph. One makes a photograph", or something along those lines.

Those folks who feel they can sidestep the fundamentals of photography by simply using the lastest whizbang software that does the work for them.

My use has nothing to do with SOOC. 1-degree and 1/2-degree light meters allow me to accurately place tonal values in the initial capture and then fine-tune that placement in processing.

Yes everyone should have a light meter... I have two... but where... and most important why!!! Why, because you look more professional and yes, perhaps an ego thing of getting the photo perfect for SOOC display of ability.

Old cameras had an arrow in the view and we with finger tips changed speed or f stop to make the arrow 0 or -- or + based on the scene. We got good at it because of the expense of film and processing.

New cameras have the same in view metering but complicated by color but still we can judge or more semi-AI do a dynamic range shot and work in post processing. Less complicated is knowing that you want to have more detail in the shadows and care little about the sky and you adjust the exposure compensation dial. Eye/mind light-meter... and if mistaken... adjustment in post... especially if you take RAW.

Much of photography is knowing the fundamentals and "wetting your finger and holding it in the air" predictions. ** And big thing... digital film is low cost.

**I.E. It isn’t an exact science—it’s a kind of finger in the air thing to make predictions.

I have and primarily use two light meters. One is an SEI Photometer. The other is a Sekonic L758DR.

For "Ripley's Believe it or not"---light meters now for $350. list $500.00?

Every photographer should have a light meter, for both reflected and incident readings. I have always used Weston meters as did Ansel Adams. I bought my first Weston in probably 1954 and Weston was already on version Weston Master II. I now have a number of them including Western Master, Master II and Master III. I find little difference. I also have the clamp on incident reading light cone that make Weston read both forms of light in high and low ranges, both incident and reflected ligh.

Tonight from B&H email advertisement most of you have also received.

So----do you pay $348 or $150? Is list---$348 or $500?

Does that actually mean the list for a Sektonic--70th aniverary is $500.00--(or $350?)--?

What form of off camera metering does UHH membership use?-----

I have a number of lenses that require the f-stop to be set to the smallest opening when used on my digital Nikons. That's just the way it works.

Good Afternoon
So I purchased the following lens a few days ago and once(Nikon AF 50mm 1:1.8 D) I got the lens I tested it on all 3 of my Nikon cameras and the lens failed on all 3 cameras. Now prior no issues with any of these cameras and I can add any lens and they all work. So not a camera issue. I reached back out to the seller and he was wondering why I was having this issue. He stated that he never had an issue and the lens is in great working condition(Error message blinking fee) Also moved the red button to the on/off position with no difference.
Test Cameras
Nikon D750 FX
Nikon D5300 DX
Nikon D300 DX
So he thought about it for a minute and replied and said move the setting on the lens to 22 Max and give it a try. So I did so and turns out the lens worked great on all 3 cameras with no errors or issues. So I just wanted to reach out and ask for some feedback or input on why. Now I did go one step further and checked to see what cameras would this lens work on and all 3 cameras would be no issue for this lens. Awaiting any inputs.

The jigsaw puzzle I bought my wife for Christmas proved quite a challenge but, never one to give up, she’s finally mastered it! You may recognise the image as one of my composites. I should have added something - a texture or pattern - to the plain areas of the background, it involved trying each piece in turn rather than matching any part of a picture. Very laborious and something I wouldn’t personally have the patience for, my name NOT being Job!

NIC has its good points. However, to produce a good black and white photo it takes a bit more than just converting the original capture to a really nice black and white photograph. It would take an understanding of The Zone System and how you camera handles the dynamic range of the scene. Thus, how to place the best rendering of the scene in black and white. Another thing to consider is the application of colored filters so you can reproduce those effect in the final photograph. Additionally, how to adjust for color contamination. These will help you produce the best gradations in the final print.

Just pushing buttons on presets and hoping for the best somewhat removes you from being the photographer creating the photograph. The software did it instead. There are any techniques that will convert a digital capture to black and white. I have found it’s not a one size fits all situation. It’s similar to selecting a grade of paper when printing in the darkroom.

When I write print I loosely refer to printed photographs and posted photographs.

I admit I am addicted to my Sony A7III. I am seeing new possibilities. I enjoy creating B&W images and seeing creatively. I have been editing with ACR and it's current update with presets is fun. However some B&W photographers swear by the Nic collection for this type of editing. I would like to get the hogs opinions on this. I occasionally enter competitions and want to create the best image I can.
To further tax my poor older brain, I am fascinated with infrared photography. In a recent lecture on this topic I told I can use a 720 filter on my Sony to do this type of photography. I would like to avoid buying a modified camera if possible. Again, your opinions please.
This forum is a wonderful teaching tool. I appreciate every posting.
