You are right about the noise, up to a point as noise appears in all format. I selected a blank test system as it is not influenced by anything other than compression artifacts.

Another thing you are right about but do not mention clearly. The more complex the picture the less visible the compression is becomes visible.

As to my pictures... I'll post some one day or another but only if needed to illustrate something. I am not shy, I just do not see the point of posting just to post, especially here where when ask a question the answers are contradictory and drown the 'right stuff' with garbage comments (check out the analysis forum to see samples of it. As to the oooh!!! Aaaah! sorry, I am not going for that either.

What bugs me in the whole thing here is not the theft but that the 'pro' letting his 'personal problem' destroy the day of a client.

Stolen gear is an impediment but at least he had some of his equipment to keep shooting. I have been in situations where lifting my hands to the sky and say: "that's it" when stopping shooting could have been a solution but I did not because it is unprofessional.

The idea to wait for the car rental to bring a spare key and ruin someone else's day? How about hitching a ride with some of the wedding party and deal with the rest later?

A single suggestion: switch to firefox. It works better for compatibility and allows you greater control of what goes in and out of your PC.

IE 8 was notorious for its "buginess".

I could have used a script to get the same shapes at the same place but did not because I did not think of it, until now. Sorry.

In any case, this is not a scientific demonstration. It still shows at least three shortcomings of JPG format:
- Banding in gradient color (sky, snow as example)
- Creations of artifacts in sharp contrasted areas (see the corners of each object or their intersections)
- Last but not least, color bleeding and deterioration.

Remember that this not about convincing folks to change their workflow or anything else but to give a possible work around that is limited in that it does not 'recreate' missing data but changes what still exist with more color shades when the image is edited.

What I did:

STEP 1
Create CS6 document 800*800
Color depth 8 bit
Used 3 fill layers to create a graduated image*
Used the gradient tool on each layer
Selected web only colors
1) diagonal top left corner to bottom right corner RED
2) Diagonal bottom left corner to top right corner GREEN
3) Horizontal from left to right BLUE
Saved as:
1 PSD (just because not used since I cannot export it to a DNG)
2 JPG Medium compression - Starts to sho banding
3 PNG No compression
Notice the banding in the image by flipping between JPG and PNG

STEP 2
Opened the JPG and PNG files
Added a back square, 100% opacity
Saved and closed both files
Notice the artifacts created on each of the black box corners of the JPG (pixelization)

STEP 3
Opened the JPG and PNG files
Added a white circle saved (100% opacity)
Saved and closed both files
Notice the artifacts created on each of the black box corners (spreading pixelization, looks liquefied)

STEP 4a
Opened the JPG and PNG files
Added a blue polygon, 100% opacity
Added three Yellow circles overlapping each shape, opacity 100%
Added three Yellow circles overlapping each shape, opacity 50%
Saved and closed both files
Notice the bleeding that takes place over each shape.

Opened the JPG and PNG files FROM STEP 3
Changed the color mode to 16 bit on both files, saved as PSD
Added a blue polygon (100% opacity)
Added a Yellow circle overlapping a corner of the black rectangle opacity 50%
Added a yellow circle overlapping a corner of the blue polygon plus another overlapping the white circle, opacity 100%
Added a yellow circle overlapping a corner of the blue polygon plus another overlapping the white circle, opacity 50%
Saved and closed both files


How to look at it:
With an image viewer like ACDSee flip between each JPG iteration and you will see the changes taking place in the JPG format. Magnify as needed. Banding does not need magnification.
flips edits between 8 bits and 16 bits to see a subtle difference. As stated the difference is not in the details that are lost, THEY WILL NOT be recreated but the color shade is different. Also remember that this new format will be the one to start with from now on.

I blew up the same area of both 8 and 16 bits JPG then to highlight the nearly invisible changes I used tone curve to show the new color variations.

* One of the notorious side effect of JPG compression is banding in areas that are the same color shade.
