Don’t forget, we are the generation trying to deal with the results of our several generations’ dependence on fossil fuels for our energy needs. We could continue to use fossil fuels, and expend tremendous time and money mitigating (if it is even possible) their detrimental environmental impacts but they are not an unlimited resource. What do we do when their scarcity is so dire we cannot afford them? While recycling lithium batteries is a costly process, it pales in comparison to the costs of mitigating or dealing with the environmental impacts of an ever increasing use of fossil fuels.
We cannot just sit on our hands and do nothing to change the trajectory of our dependence on fossil fuel energy sources.

I have no problem developing new technologies, but it will take time. Every type of energy storage or source has its pitfalls, but we might not understand the negative impacts they have on us or the earth for many decades in the future. I say use the oil, but always find ways to make it cleaner and conserve as much as practical. Solar and wind help, but they will never be as productive as fossil fuels
