Glad I could help -- and by the way, I prefer Heineken. Enjoy your 850. I purchased a book, from Rocky nook, Nikonians Press, called Mastering the Nikon 850 by Darrell Young. Lots of illustration and very helpful. A good reference book, even if you don't read the whole thing - which you won't.
Have fun,
Michael
Both are dramatic. I would go with #1
My guess you had it on 3D and not group autofocus. Push AF button on lower left of camera body and turn front control dial. You will see the focus area change from 3D to Group to Auto, 5, 9, etc. This should work. Also, If you use Back Button focus, perhaps you are hitting the toggle (joy stick) and not the AE On or Back Button focus button.
If this fails, set the camera back to its default mode and reprogram your settings.
Good luck,
Michael
Agree. Get subsription for $10/month. Always have the latest version and features and lens corrections.

Not sure if practical for you, but changed the image file names or numbers and LR will see them as different files. Never have done this but delete the images in LR and re-import. Note, I have not tried this approach as yet.

If you can get a D500 -- do!!. Love my D500 with the Nikon 200 - 500 mm lens or the 300 mm F/4 (with 1.4 extender). Great for birds. I have ordered the new 500 mm F/5.6 PF, but back ordered. Renting it for a bird trip. The D7200 is also a great alternative (in my opinion) if you can't make the jump to the D500.
