I have lightroom classic. my problem is that I have already downloaded some photos onto a hard drive and need to re-download them onto another drive. Since they were downloaded one time light room won't let me download them again. Any ideas how I can get around this? Would re-naming the files help? How do I re-name files in windows?

If you are using Windows, open File Explorer, go to the drive where the photos are stored, copy the photos you want and paste them to the new drive. They are files just like any other file on your computer. Just don't move or delete them outside of Lightroom.

In the import module, try un-checking the "Don't import suspected duplicates" box.

It's unclear why you need another copy of the same files. Certainly, importing duplicates into your LR catalog is not the best option. If you want copies of the files, simply use your operating system to open a window showing either the file location on your hard drive or showing the camras card. Then, just select all the files and copy to the new / duplicate location.

If you want to 'move' them, such as the files are on the C:\ drive, but you want them on the external H:\ drive, you have a few options:

a) If you haven't done any editing, just the import, you can go into LR and simply select all the images and remove them from the catalog. Then, reimport from the correct location.

b) You can use the 'move' option inside LR in the Folder view.

c) If you have done some editing work that you don't want to lose, see (b). Or, move the files external to LR and just update the file location when they show as missing inside LR.

This is an older video, but for Lightroom classic it still applies. The main idea is to use the navigator panel within Lightroom, on the left, right click on a folder to see choices. The + button top right of the folders window lets you put a new folder anywhere, then you can import to that folder or choose all photograhs in the catalog and select all from the edit menu, and right click the new folder and choose move selected to this folder. You can also drag one folder into another to move the folder. They warn against moving folders outside of lightroom, but if you do just remember where you put them and choose find missing folder in lightroom. I don't do much moving around so hopefully you will get more responses. https://helpx.adobe.com/lightroom-classic/how-to/lightroom-move-folder-files.html

lightroom will not find the files if they are not imported using light room

You're going to have to use <quote reply> and be more detailed in your responses for the community to understand and respond in a helpful manner.

Brian,

It is not clear what you are trying to accomplish. Paul has already suggested using Lightroom's ability to move files from withing the program.

If you want copies of the originals you can also use Export and pick "as Original". That will send unaltered copies to another drive.

Why do you need to add them to a second drive? Wouldn't it be easier to move the folder using Lightroom? Do you really want duplicate files?

I don't think renaming will help - Lightroom looks at the metadata.

OK - I was a bit vague - so here's a better explanation (I hope) I down loaded some pics onto a hard drive thru LR. I then downloaded some more pics thru light room onto a different hard drive. I now want to move the files from the first hard drive onto the second one. Since the files have already been downloaded light room won't let me download the files again. I tried "moving" them thru LR but - no luck.

The 'move' process is accomplished by:

1) access the current folder in the LR Folder view of the catalog. Call this the 'from' folder

2) select all the images in the 'from' folder.

3) Navigate the view of the folders and find the 'to' folder within LR. This works if your description is accurate and LR now knows about this 'to' folder because you have image files in the 'to' folder that LR knows about.

4) Right-click that 'to' folder and select the option "Move selected images to this folder"

The options mentioned in my earlier post also exist.

If you want these photos in Lightroom for processing, then use Lightroom to move them to the second drive.

If you really want copies of the files on a second drive, then just copy them using Windows Explorer.

You can easily rename the files you previously loaded into Lightroom; select them all and use the Library->Rename menu item. Then you can download the same files again.

Drag and drop from within LR. Mark all images you want moved and simply drag the batch to where you want them to be, even to a different hard drive that is showing up on the left-hand side. You can create a folder before you do this if you need to. There is no need to download these images again, which will only create confusion in the future as you would then have duplicate files. BTW, LR does read by file name, not metadata, if you do download images twice.

What would be the "right" way to store or place your photos for future reference. Folders or Collections?
