Perhaps I am missing 'something' in this conversation. Typically, lenses are acquired to suit the purposes that the photographer desires. If it is speed that you are after, then Olympus has some great prince lenses. I recently purchased a 25 mm lens that I use indoors for photos of my grandchildren using natural light. Outdoors, I use the 12-40 2.8 Olympus lens. A great lens but not 'fast'.

Is there an option on the lens itself to shoot in manual. Perhaps, this choice was inadvertently made and unbeknownst to you, you are shooting in manual focus?

I have the Olympue EM-1 with the f2.8 12-40 lens. The two literally and figuratively were made for each other. I am up there in age and have no difficulty keeping everything in balance.
My challenge continues to be to learn the EVF system after being a Nikon SLR and DSLR user for over 45 years.

I recently purchased an Olympus OM-D camera with a 12-40 lens, f2.8 throughout the range. I have been a Nikon enthusiast for over 40 years and a prime kens user. I will figure out the shooting options with my new camera and the EVF. So far, I love this camera! It is very light in comparison. It is extremely fast. Low light is a snap, no pun intended.

Several years ago, I had a business trip to Salt Lake City. I left to a day early and arriving in Salt Lake City, rented a car and drove to Moab. The next morning, I was on the short drive to Arches, arriving before the opening time. It was August so it was wise to start early in the day. I was on a mission and spent 5 hours in the park, got some iconic and memorable photographs and by noon was in my rental car on my way back to SLC.
I hace seen photographs from Zion and Brice and will make it there one say. For the time that you have available, I think your choice of parks is appropriate.
By the way, I chose Arches because of its smaller size and the ability to see the highlights in a short space of time as that was all that I had.
Have a great time!

I recently purchased an Olympus OMD-1 with the 12-40, 2.8 lens. This was purchased for travel as my NikonD300 with my bagful of lenses was/is too heavy. I read up on the offerings from Olympus, Sony and Fugifilm, looking only at mirror less cameras. I then went to a few dealers and held each camera in which I was interested and 'fiddled' with the menu and controls. My Olympus is fast, compact yet has a decent heft, similar in operation to the Nikon (certainly as opposed to the Fugifilm). Admittedly, I must learn how to use EVF versus the optical viewfinder. I'm a person with little patience typically but I did my homework for this important purchase.

Your responses thus far have been most helpful. The camera shop in Toronto where I visited was pushing the Olympus pro (mirror less) camera with two lenses; 12 to 40 (2.8) and a 9 to 18. The camera has good weight and the images are sharp. The EVF system us so different. A whole new 'language' to learn! Purchase decision us pending.

Hello. This is my first post on the site. I have been reading queries and answers for a number of months and like the sincerity that I find. I have been a Nikon SLR and DSLR user for many years and enjoy the huge potential for creativity that the cameras and interchangeable lenses have allowed me. I am now considering a lighter system as my needs (may) have changed. I am considering purchasing a mirrorless camera system but have no knowledge of the technology. I am concerned about low light capability, type of lenses that one can buy and shutter release speed. The readers 'out there' will be of inestimable value.
