have been a low grade photo hobbyist since high school, never could afford decent gear, my wife got me a d3200 couple years ago and have been hitting the books and have shoot couple thousand photos {nothing spectacular} and learning this equipment, and like all men {and, yes some women} are like kids in a candy store!! always looking and hoping to step up, so I was looking at the d7100 and the d800/d800e, the d7100 because the plugs are the same as d3200, in my quest to figure out how I could do this with out dropping another fortune, I found that I had bought fx glass, that works on the dx format af-s 28-300mm and the af-s 18-85mm ,also an fx formatted glass, after finding that out I decided to go d800.
recently I has a small windfall of cash and got me a d800 , I will have to let you hoggers know, for me, it is like going from a comet to a bmw!!! I am not bragging just proud!!
SSOOOO, when I figure out how to turn it on!! and set it!!! will post some pics, this site has helped a lot in my decision , thanks to all with input

this is why I am reading a stack a books/ doing online courses, doing actual classes, I figure I would spend a good year or so studying the products and procedures {Nikon, just happened to be the product I went with} and procedures and rules of this field, I know someday I will look at a photography I took and go" not bad"

"As in all industries there needs to be a standard and in photography it's PS & LR. When I studied it at college we had to have PS and all photo editing tutoring was shown using it."..................

to "rjm" that is a quote from you last post "veer batum", and in that sentence you stated "WHEN I STUDIED IT AT COLLEGE" you must have got a scholarship? someone else paid? BUT none the less that college was paid for!! yes I do agree there is a lot of stuff for free, but if you do not buy some course and get "THE INDUSTDRY STANDARD" you do not know what it is!! I was a heavy equipment mechanic for over 40 years, everyone mechanic had an option,{when I taught my apprentices I told them do as I exactly as I show you!!{ "THE INDUSTRY STANDARD"} and when you get some experience under your belt, you can do it the way that works best for you!!!}I was the journeyman! I had the education! I knew what it took to do the job! and now I am the apprentice!!{ in this photography thing} I would say about $400.oo buck or so for a year, get's me the pro's point of view!!!! I will take ALL that knowledge {the industry standard} and end up doing what is best for me!! the same as every other man in the world that has some salt about him!!!!!!!
A MAN HAS TO HAVE ENOUGH EDUCATION ABOUT HIM TO DESIFER WHAT IS CRAP AND WHAT IS NOT!!!!!!
I can not tell you how many SKYHOOKS i looked for when i 17 years old!!!!!

I am no spring chicken, and this computer thing is not that easy, sometimes just a kick in the ass will get you started, show me how to turn it on, show me a couple steps, how the software should be used and then I will do to it what I want, you know like being taught to drive a car when you were young.. gas/brake/drive/reverse/ turn signals/ etc..etc..etc...
you know, this reminds me of a story, when I got my first computer I was able to some things with it {1999} after a couple months I fighting to figure something out and just could not get, so I went out into the world to seek knowledge, ended up at the computer store , talked to the rep, he explained it once and it sounded like Charlie Browns mother., I Said "explain it to me like I was 9 years old"!! he told me
,if I was 9 years old, he would not have to explain it to me!!!!!sometime some guidance does a lot to help !!!!!!

Most of the time i do not bother with arrogance in people, i am aware that for the most part, that person has earned the right to be arrogant {if he has not earned he is ignornat}
I can not speak for any other asspiring photographer's only for myself, i have loved photography from teenage years, and only now in my pre retirement am i finally able to pursue this hobby, and make some effort to make it an income.
this field of photography is hard to get into, i have ivested thousands so far in equipment and books and online and onsite classes, it is easy for someone to sit up on a high horse and judge others and yet, wait for it!! i notice that when i click on your user name you have no web site no photos to share to see the quality of your work!!!!But yet again with you posting this, has given me yet another place to spend money to try and further my education on photography and for that i thank you! and maybe someday i will be able to snatch the stone from YOUR hand, as you did before me......

my nickel of advice, !! I bought a lens on amazon 600-1300mm with a 2x telephoto adapter, with a f/mount to use on my Nikon , paid $250.oo and some change. I got it to see how much I would use it, before I spent 3k to 13k for a good lens and not even use it that much!! I say buy it! you may not even use it that much!! $125.oo is just not that much money, compared to what we spend on other gear!! just say'in
